How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Today on this 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, we're going to install part number TK90160. This is the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller. To help us with our install, we'll also be using part number 3015-P. This is the Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers. We'll go ahead and hook it up to our trailer and we'll go ahead and try it out. We got a "C" here and that stands for connection, so we know that it sees the trailer, so that's a good sign.

We'll go ahead and move the manual override. You can see how it scrolls through the numbers. Here's our boost button on top here. We can go through the settings, boost 1, 2, and 3 and no boost. This spin wheel here is for our gain or how much power goes out to our trailer.

We'll go ahead and hold the manual override over and move the wheel. That way we can go ahead and control the total output. Down to nothing to somewhere in between, where you typically want to start off and make your adjustments up or down as needed to match your trailer. Lastly, we'll go ahead and hit the brake pedal. Check for response from the brake controller. Looks like we're good to go.

This is our brake controller right here. This is the bracket that comes with the brake controller we're going to use to install it and hold it in place. This is our wiring adapter right here. This end will plug into the port that's provided by the manufacturer back over here and then this will plug into our brake controller. We're going to start off with our adapter cord first.

This is our access panel to install our cable. We need to remove a nut in the center here and then pop off the cover. This end of our cable is going to plug into this port right here. We can go ahead and push it into place until it clicks. At this point, we can go ahead and put our cover back on. Next we'll go ahead and find a location for our brake controller. This is highly personal, but typically it's going to go on the right hand side in the driver's area. There's a nice piece of metal right here maybe we can attach our bracket to and that's what we're going to do, but also you could mount it up here as well. Also, I've seen them installed onto the side here as well, but beware of your knee hitting this as you get in and out of the vehicle. The cord is long enough, you can put it in a variety of locations. Here or here. Take this back apart. Once you find your location, we'll go ahead and attach it. The screw we're using doesn't come with the kit. We're going to replace these with a self-tapping screw, a number eight size that uses a quarter inch nut driver. What's nice about this bracket is we can put it up really close to the console here if we want. You want to make sure your bracket is in a straight line with the truck, front to rear, and then we'll install our second screw. Tighten them both up. Let's go ahead and put our cable to the back of our brake controller and it just snaps in. We've already got power going to it, so that's nice, and we'll just go ahead and just put these slots into the corners here of our bracket and snap it into place. We'll take a moment to zip tie our cable to make sure it's safe and secure and out of the way and we're already done. Go ahead and cut off the tails and we'll be good to go. That'll finish it for our install and that'll do it for part number TK90160, the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller and also part number 3015-P, the Tekonsha Plug-in Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers, on our 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. .
