Review of the Swagman Hitch Bike Racks on a 2020 Mazda CX-5

Eve Angie: Hi, it's Eve Angie, from etrailer.com. And common today we are looking at our Swagman XC 2-Bike Platform Hitch Bike Rack on a 2020 MAZDA CX-5. So this is a great bike rack. If you are just looking for a platform style bike rack that will take your bike from point A to point B without having to pay for all the extra fancy schmancy bells and whistles. It has a very simple design the way our bike is mounted to our bike rack. It has these two wheel hoops over here, which can accommodate the tire width of up to three and a half inches.

These can also be moved back and forth in order to accommodate bikes of different wheel bases. This is also a frame-mounted bike rack. So you can see here how it has these hooks with this slight padding just to protect your bike from different scuffs and scratches. I do not recommend using this with maybe your carbon frame bikes simply because a frame mount is not ideal, because it might warp the frame. But it works really well with your basic mountain bikes. To take the bike off, you just need to release these frame mounts.

But what I actually like to do is completely remove the hooks, that makes it a lot simpler for me to just lift the bike away, so I don't have to lift it up and out of the way.You can also remove this mast and just push it down. That way it's only a slight lift and I'm ready to go on my ride. So the mast is secured by this pin. So you will need to move the pin around as you move the mast around. And these hooks over here, you can see how they fit onto the mast and just ratchet it down to secure your bikes.

There we go. So with this in place, let's see exactly the length it adds to the back of our vehicle. So when you are carrying a bike rack, you do have to remember that there is a bike rack behind you. And the clearance you'll need to know is 20-1/2 inches from the back of our bumper to the back of these cradles over here. That's just something to keep in mind. When you're driving into your garage or parking in a tight spot.

It's actually really close to our vehicle, which is good since you don't have to think about that extra length. As for ground clearance with our bike rack, from the bottom of the bike rack, right here to the ground, it is 14-1/2 inches. So what's nice is that this does have a slight shank rise. So that really helps with vehicles with low ground clearance when they're driving up a steep driveway or up a steep Hill. If you do want to access the hatch on your MAZDA CX-5, you will need to tilt or fold down this mast.So with it folded down, you can see how there's plenty of space to get in there, maybe put your groceries away, grab things out of your trunk and you don't have to worry about uninstalling the bike rack completely. You do need to take off your bikes and put down the mast since it does not tilt away. So that's just something to think about. Secure your mast when it is folded down, you do need to put the pin back up right over there. The closest point to our vehicle is by these wheel hoops. So from the back bumper to the end of the wheel hoops is eight inches, which is a lot of clearance between there. This fits into an inch and a quarter and two inch hitch receivers, we have it in our two inch hitch receiver, so it has the sleeve attached to this bike rack.It also comes with an anti-rattle pin and clip. If you do want a locking function, you can purchase a separate pin and clip that can be locked. Now what I recommend, especially when want to store in your garage is to fold it up. So we call this the storage position. You just take out these pins and fold it up, make sure to put the pins back so they stay up like that. There we go. So it's one on each side. And it might be a little tricky, so you might have to lift up the bike rack as you do, so just to make sure it comes. There you go right there. So you can see how it's really a small, a really compact. So this is a nice position for it to be in if you want to store it in your garage, or you can can drive around town without it out and about. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is showing the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This simulates hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage or driveway. Eve Angie: So my final thoughts about this bike rack is I really like how simple and minimalistic it is. I don't want all this extra frills, all the extra straps, maybe things that I might not need if I just want my bike rack to get my bike to a place safely and securely. This is a great option. Now I do wish my bike rack would tilt away, so with this one, you do have to move the mast down and unload your bikes. So that's just something to think about when you are purchasing a bike rack. So that was a look at the Swagman XC 2-Bike Platform Hitch Bike Rack on a 2020 MAZDA CX-5.
