Review of the Swagman E-Spec Electric Bike Rack on a 2020 Ford Escape

Howdy everyone. John here, and today we're taking a look at the Swagman E-Spec on our 2020 Ford Escape. This is gonna be a great choice if you want an ease of use bike rack for E-bikes. Taking a closer look at it, it actually is going to have a pretty good weight capacity 70 pounds per bike, and it's also going to have a slew of features. Let's take a closer look. Now, like I said, it's going to have a pretty good weight capacity which is going to be able to hold everything from your heavier mountain bikes to your E-bikes, but it unfortunately will not be able to hold any of your fat tire bikes, because it only has a three inch tire width capacity.

Along with that, it is going to be frame contact. So if you have any odd shaped frames or carbon frames, this may not be the one for you. One thing I do want to point out is it will not tilt away, because this will also work on motor homes, RVs, and fifth wheels. So because of that, it will not be able to be tilted away. But overall all you have to do is take off your bike to get into the back.

Now let's take a closer look at that. So first we're gonna wanna take off these straps. I do really like these straps, they're easy to work with and we have this little pad here. This is definitely one of the better pads that you can find on the market. Undo this.

And one thing I do like about the E-Spec is you can pop these off. So there are some other electric bike racks that you can't pop these off and it's a pain to get your bike off. If you aren't able to, off or on. You can see it also is going to be lockable with a key, that will be keyed alike with the rest of your bike rack. You can also put this down, which is nice.

You're gonna have to hold onto your bike, but you can put this down so it makes it easier for you to lift your bike off and go for your ride. And you're gonna wanna make sure everything is back in place, isn't gonna take any time at all. And remember, if you're gonna put any of them on first, you need to make sure that it is the longer one first. So that is something to always keep in mind. There we go. And then also, as you can see, there's going to be this little handle that you can turn to move it back and forth depending on the size of your wheel. There we go. And now that we have it all in place, let's get some measurements. Okay, let's get the length from the back of our vehicle to the back of our bike rack. It is going to be 20 inches there. It's gonna come out a little bit more right over here, so about 23 and a half, which is not bad. Overall on the the shorter end whenever it comes to platform style, it also will have a rise. So the closest point to the back is gonna be 17 and a half. So just keep that in mind whenever you're going up steep hills or rocky terrain because you don't wanna bottom out. But overall, you shouldn't have a problem with it here. It can also fold up. All you have to do is pop this pin out, and then that's gonna put it in place. Make sure to put that pin back. It usually has this little part right here on it so you can keep a better eye on it. So I put that right there. It takes a little bit of force, but once you get it on there, you're good. And as you can see, that's gonna cut down significantly on the space that it's taking up on the back of your vehicle. It's gonna make it about 11 inches, give or take. So that's gonna be good. And it's not gonna get really any closer. There's a little bit of movement, but you can still fit a couple hands there. And then you don't have to worry about anything happening. Now, I will let you know that with your Ford Escape, if you happen to have one of those situations where you put your foot underneath and it lifts the back, you may wanna be careful whenever you're putting it on here, because we did notice that as we we're putting this on, it did open the back hatch and it hit, but as long as you're keeping an eye on that and maybe have it down whenever you're deciding to put it in you shouldn't have a problem. Now the shank here is a very, very sturdy shank. It's going be a two inch one, and it's going to have an anti-rattle bolt and lock as you can see right here. It's gonna be keyed alike with the rest of your locks on this bike rack. And as I put this in it is a little bit to mess with but overall it's very solid. And as I move it around back and forth by the shank it's gonna move and you're not gonna have any shaker replay. This is our test course. Let's start with the slalom. This shows side to side action such as turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action such as hitting curves, potholes, road debris, or even uneven pavement. Last of all, the solid speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as driving through a parking lot, or parking garage, or driving in and out of a driveway. Now, when it comes to the E-Spec, personally I think it is a great middle of the road option whenever it comes to your E-bikes. If you're looking for something that's just a little bit higher weight capacity, the Hollywood SE is a great choice. It's gonna give you about 10 extra pounds per bike but it isn't as easy whenever it comes to putting things on and off as this one. Personally, I think this is a better choice if you're looking for ease of use. But if you really wanna have the best of both worlds, maybe check out the Hollywood Destination E-bike rack that's gonna have a little bit of everything, a really nice tilt away, and still be able to hold those nice E-bikes. And that was a look at our Swagman E-Spec on our 2020 Ford Escape. Thanks for watching..
