Review of the SeaSucker Monkey Bars Roof Rack on a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta

Hey, everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we'll be taking a look at how the SeaSucker Monkey Bars, we have the 48 inch version here, fits on the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta. If you need a quick and easy solution for carrying around those fun roof rack accessories, maybe you wanna carry a kayak around or you have a roof mounted bike rack or maybe you even wanna carry around a roof box for extra storage space, what you first need is a roof rack system. We do have some custom fit roof rack systems available for your Volkswagen Jetta, but they do take a minute to install and they do clamp into your doors. If that's something you're not comfortable with or you just need a fast solution right now, the SeaSucker Monkey Bars might be the one for you.

So, these use vacuum cups to secure to your car and you might be concerned about vacuum cups. It's perfectly fine. They have a really strong pull rating. I've had these on my car for a full week straight. And you can check out our other videos showing how the vacuum cups work.

Now, with that though, you can put them wherever you want on your roof. So, your setup might not have to be like mine, but this is where I found it to be a good universal fit. So, for crossbar spread, they are 26 inches apart. You measure center to center for the crossbar spread. Double-check your accessories.

If it's too far apart, some of your accessories can't clamp down. If it's too close together, you're gonna have uneven weight distribution. So, this seems a good spot where we still are level on the curved roof of our Jetta. The front crossbar has the two vacuum cups on each side. And the way I do it is I just put it down there, push down as I press the plunger.

So, throughout the day or throughout your trip, just double-check that plunger. If you see the orange indicator, it means you have to tighten it down. But also, once you get at your trip, it just means you press these tops. Those release the plungers. You can lift off the roof rack and store it inside your car. You saw how easy it is to take the roof rack off, which is great once you got to the resort or to where your camping. The downside is they're really easy to take off. So, in terms of security, there are no locks on the roof rack. If you wanna keep the roof rack up and you wanna make sure everything is secure, SeaSucker does have some cable locks. They anchor into the window. Now, roof clearances, there's different measurements here. One is gonna be the distance from the roof to the bottom of the crossbar. The next is distance from the roof to top of crossbar. So, below the crossbar, we have about 2 3/4 inches of clearance. That's gonna be helpful for those accessories that have clamps that go around. You have plenty of space there. Now, the height it adds to your roof is about four inches tall and that's gonna be where your cargo sits. So, if you're carrying around skis and snowboards, especially the skis with extra tall bindings, you wanna make sure there's enough clearance there and they don't scratch your roof. And if you don't have the clearance, you get to check out our accessories that give you some extra height. These are the 48 inch long versions and you can see that they're pretty much perfect with our Jetta. They're almost flush with our roof. And with the Jetta being lower to the ground, you don't want that much overhang. Too much overhang means you're hitting your head against the crossbar when you get into the car. So, this is perfect. If you want more overhang or more crossbar space, maybe you have a larger car, you can check out the 60 inch long version. I personally don't think that would be good for the Jetta and go with the 48 one inch instead. So, if you're still trying to decide between the SeaSucker roof rack or a custom fit roof rack, it really depends on what type of adventure you're going on and if you're using this long-term or not. This does have less weight capacity than most custom fit roof racks at 150 pounds. Plus, they are round crossbars. I always have a hard time trying to fit accessories around those round cross bars because they tend to slide one way or the other. So, if you have accessories that you're leaving on for weeks at a time or something really heavy, definitely check out our custom fit options. Use our fit guide here at etrailer.com to find the right fit for you. If you want that quick, easy, and honestly, it works really well as a roof rack to help you carry those accessories, then that's the SeaSucker Monkey Bars and it's nice to see that they're a great fit for the Jetta. And that was a look right here at our SeaSucker Monkey Bars and how they fit on the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta..
