How to Install the Roadmaster falcon 2 Tow Bar on a 1998 Jeep Wrangler

Today on our 1998 Jeep Wrangler, we'll be installing the Roadmaster Falcon Two tow bar with a weight capacity of 6,000 pounds, part number RM-520. To begin with, we're going to need to go ahead and connect our quick disconnect as well as the safety plate to the mounting bracket that's already installed on this vehicle. To do that, we'll be using the bolts, the flat washers, the lock washers, as well as the hex nuts. We'll go ahead and install this hardware loosely until we're sure everything lines up. We'll go ahead and put both the driver and the passenger side on. Now that we know that the quick disconnect crossbar goes on and off easily, we can go ahead and set it off and now we'll go ahead and torque the hardware to the manufacturer's specification.

Now with the crossbar in place, we'll go ahead and put the lynch pin through the vertical pin. Now we're ready to go ahead and put the tow bar assembly onto our tow vehicle. To do this, we'll slide the tow bar into the receiver on the tow vehicle. Then we'll put the pin in, followed by the clip that holds it in place. Now let's go ahead and hook it to our tow vehicle.

To do this, we'll lower the cross members down and spread them out. We'll then go ahead and pull them out towards the crossbar. You'll then go ahead and take your base pin and go from the outside of the vehicle towards the inside, going through the quick disconnect crossbar, through the tow bar, and back out the other side of the crossbar. You'll then notice that the lynch pin will line up with the small metal tab that has a hole in it as well as the hole in the base pin. You want to make sure that you put it through both of these and then lock it down into place.

You repeat this process for both sides. We'll be using the Roadmaster single hook coiled safety cables in a 68 inch length which are available from e-trailer at part number RM-643. To begin with, you'll see that there's already a short safety cable that was attached to the base plate of this vehicle. We'll then take the quick link and go through the end of the short safety cable as well as the new safety cable with the loop end. You can then see here there's a tab on the base plate that we need to go through and tighten down our quick link.

We'll go ahead and repeat this process for the other side. With that done, we'll go ahead and coil the excess safety cable around the tow bar, making sure that we cross from one side, that we start on, to the other side, where we latch to the rear receiver on the tow vehicle. Finally, we'll go ahead and take our four flat, which was already on our towed vehicle, and connect it up with the tow vehicle. With that, that will conclude the installation of our Roadmaster Falcon Two tow bar 6,000 pound capacity, part number RM-520 on our 1998 Jeep Wrangler.

If you're asking about attaching the tow-bar quick disconnect plates to the base plates installed on the vehicle, usually those are 75 ft./lbs. But that will depend on which exact QD kit is being used. If you're asking about the base plate kits that attach to the frame of the vehilce, then that will vary on vehicle and which fastener is being used at a particular step in the installation. Best thing to do is consulting the instructions that came with the kit.
