How to Install the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain Tow Bar on a 2014 Ford Fusion


Shane: Hi, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be going over Roadmaster's Nighthawk All Terrain non-binding tow bar. It's going to be one of the seven components required to flat tow your 2014 Ford Fusion. Let's go over those components now.One is going to be our base plate. It's going to connect directly to the chassis of the vehicle to give you that solid attachment point for your tow bar.Second is going to be your tow bar. It's going to give you that solid connection point between your base plate on your towed vehicle and your RV.Third is going to be your safety cables.

These are going to be a secondary safety device in case your tow bar happens to fail.Fourth is going to be your braking system. Braking system is mounted inside the vehicle. It's going to allow you to apply the brakes in the vehicle while it's being flat towed rather than having to depend on the RV to stop both vehicles.Next is going to be our wiring. Our wiring is going to allow us to transfer all of our light signals from our RV to our vehicle while it's being flat towed so that we're safe.Our sixth component is going to be a battery charge line. It's going to allow us to charge our battery while we're flat towing the vehicle, because our braking system requires a power source to work.Our seventh component is going to be a brake light relay.

Because this vehicle when the key is in the off position and you push on the brake, the brake lights come on, we don't want that signal to override our turn signal when we're flat towing it. The relay is going to separate that wire so we're only getting the wire functions, or the lighting functions, from the RV.For our tow bar, I'll recommend Roadmaster's Nighthawk All Terrain, for a few reasons. It's got a nice durable finish on it, nice rugged look. Each arm's going to have an LED strip in it to enhance visibility when driving at night, not only for your safety, but for other drivers on the road's safety, too. We're going to have channels that run on the bottom of each arm for a safety cable and for our wiring.

Another great feature is the wiring safety cables come with this tow bar, so we're not going to have to worry about picking them up later on. We're going to have an 8,000 pound weight capacity. It's going to be a non-binding tow bar, which means it's going to make it easy to unhook and hook up your vehicle when you're on unlevel ground. We're going to have three points of articulation up here. It allows our arms to come in, it allows our arms to fold up, lock into place, and it allows our arms to shift this way.Another couple great features.

Our arms are going to lock into place, and to unlock them, we're going to have a lever here. So when we get to wherever our destination is, we fold the lever. It's going to unlock it. That's going to make it easy to fold that arm back in or fold our sleeve back into our arm, so we can fold our tow bar up behind our motor home.When flat towing a vehicle, you want to make sure that your tow bar is as level as possible. So what you need to do is take a couple measurements. You're going to take a measurement from the center of your hitch on your RV down to the ground, and then from the center of your pin on your base plate to the ground. If that number's within three inches, you're good to go. If it's not within three inches, it may require a rise or drop. The rise or drop can be found here at etrailer.com. A rise or drop is going to allow us to get our tow bar as level as possible, which is going to reduce any unnecessary stress while we're flat towing our vehicle.
