Review of the Rhino-Rack MasterFit Rooftop Cargo Box on a 2022 Toyota RAV4

Hi, everyone, Aidan here with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Rhino-Rack MasterFit rooftop box here on our 2022 Toyota RAV4. Now rooftop box is going to be a great way to get extra cargo on your trip whether it's stuff that doesn't fit in your vehicle or something you don't want in your vehicle. Maybe it's something messy and you just want that mess contained up here rather than inside the vehicle. It's gonna be a great way to do that. And it's gonna be a really functional box.

Let's check it out. Now we can open it from either side. We've got kind of favoring towards the passenger side of the vehicle right now. You can just insert the key that's provided, turn it to the left to unlock and push that lid open. The hinges will hold themselves open.

So that's really great to see. And inside you have a good amount of room. Everything is raised up on these ridges. So if you do have messy cargo, like we we're talking about, there's actually some sand in here from the last time someone used it, it's gonna kind of fall in those ridges and not get on your gear. So it's easy to clean up and keep your gear clean.

Inside we've got a few features to add to the convenience of the box. We've got integrated tie down points with cam buckle straps that come with the box so we can feed those straps through those loops and tie up our gear, get it all secured down. So it's not banging around inside the box and the clamps are probably my favorite feature. We can just push down on this end here with the kind of indentation and loosen up those clamps so we can get a closer look at 'em here. But the thing I like so much is the extra wide hand hold on the knob there.

That makes it really easy to tighten down. You can see here as I turn it, those jaws will close up. That's what's gonna keep it wrapped around your crossbar. Really simple to use. And they have these channels right here in the box so we can adjust it for different crossbar spreads. We're kind of maxing it out right now on our RAV4 but there is plenty of room to get them attached, nice and secure. You'll start to feel some resistance and then we can push down on that tab right there to lock it in. This does open from both sides. So if we've got it centered on the vehicle we can access it easily from either side. We've got it kind of favoring the passenger side right now. So if you know, you're gonna most likely have street parking, you can put it over there or center it in case you maybe have more room on one side versus another. I just like having the option to access it from either side. So no matter what, we can have easy access to the clamps to install it or our cargo inside. This is going to have a 15 and 1/2 cubic foot capacity internally as well as a 165 pound weight capacity. So just make sure when you're loading it up, you stay within those limits. And if your roof rack is rated lower than that 165 pound weight capacity, just be sure to abide by the lowest rated component. Couple other things to consider here is the added height to your vehicle. From the top of the crossbar to the highest point of the box, it's gonna be just under 16 inches. So as long as you've got 16 inches of clearance from the top of the crossbar to say the top of your garage door or something like that, you should be fine. Be mindful of it though, with a vehicle like this I wouldn't try to pull it in your garage. Just don't risk it. And another thing to consider is the back hatch. We wanna see if we have full access to the back with this on, and it looks like we do so we don't have to sacrifice that functionality of our vehicle just to get the box on here. We still have plenty of room, maybe seven or eight inches of space between the box and the hatch. So we don't have to worry about contact there. We do have an AVS plastic construction which for most of these rooftop boxes is pretty common. It is gonna have a textured black finish. So really the only thing that means is it's gonna have a slightly different look than something like a glossy box. That really just depends on your preference which one you want to go with. Just be mindful that the glossy one will pick up more fingerprints and smudge more over time. Maybe not hold up that nice new look as well as the textured black one does. And that's about all there is to it for the Rhino-Rack MasterFit. It's a pretty solid box. I like the look of it. I like the features it has, it may lack some of the other additional features that you might find in higher end boxes. But for me, that's not much of a loss and some might not like the styling of it. It is just kind of a basic box shape. There are some out there that have a more angular and aggressive shape. That just really depends on what you're wanting as far as style goes. But I think as far as space and function goes it's gonna be a great option for your RAV4. Thanks for watching..
