How to Install the Reese Quick-Install Custom 5th Wheel Base Rails on a 2012 Ford F-250


Today on our 2012 F-250 we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Reese quick install custom base rails and outboard installation kit for fifth wheel trailer hitches, part number RP56016-53. So here's what our base rails look like once their fully installed, and what's going to make these great is they are slightly wider than universal fit base rails for fifth wheels. This is going to help us out on installation because since they are wider, they're going to meet up with our frame brackets that are going to be on the outside. So we're going to have very minimal time that we're going to have to actually get under the bed. Now if we come to the outside here, these bolts sticking down are going to meet up with our frame plate which is going to be on the outside of our frame so it's going to make it a lot easier to install than some of the universal kits where you might have to go underneath the bed on the inside of the frame. Now the purpose of these rails are so that you can mount a fifth wheel into the bed of your truck, and it is compatible with several different brands of fifth wheels. So here we have our Reese fifth wheel, and this is going to be part number RP30866, and as you can see it fits nicely into our base rails, giving us the ability to tow with a fifth wheel now. Now the way this is going to mount is we're going to take our pins and we're going to slide them through.

Then we come around the back side with our clip. We're going to go ahead and put our clips in like that, and we're going to do that on all four points and that's what's going to lock down our fifth wheel to our base rails. Now the rails themselves aren't going to take up a whole lot of space if you don't keep your fifth wheel in your bed. Now they only measure just under two inches tall, so we're not losing a whole lot of bed space. Now as you can see here on the front, we have three sets of holes and three sets of numbers. Now these numbers are references to where you mount your legs on your fifth wheel.

Here's ours here on 20, and what that's going to translate to is depending on the configuration of your fifth wheel and where you have the legs mounted, that's going to tell you how much you're going to be able to pull. 25 being 25000 pounds, 20 being 20000 pounds and then furthest in being 16000 pounds. Now I do want to mention you do want to double check with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure that your vehicle can handle that weight, as well as the fifth wheel that you're going to be attaching to these rails. Now that we've gone over some of the features of our base rails, let's go ahead and show you how we get them installed. So the first step of our installation is going to be taking our mounting bracket here, and we're going to place it in the rear of our truck and we're going to need to measure 27 5/8ths inches from the edge of our truck bed here going towards the front of the cab. Now we need to make sure that our bar here, our mounting bracket, is square in between the seams of our truck bed wells right here.

To do that, I'm going to measure in between the seam and get my number, and then I'm going to measure the bar itself to see how much I need on either side. Once we measure that 27 5/8ths and we've found our difference to get our bracket centered, we're going to go ahead and double check and measure from the end to here to make sure that 27 5/8ths is still nice and square and our bracket's lined up. We're going to be coming to the inside holes here on the outer edge and we're going to mark our holes. We're going to mark the other side as well. Now that we have our outer holes marked we're going to come to the center here, and towards the cab, we're going to mark this hole right here. Now with all of our holes marked, we're going to go ahead and move our mounting bracket out of the way and we're going to drill holes in the five bolt holes that we marked.

Now I'm going to be using a 1/8th drill bit just to start a pilot hole, and I do want our mention you want to double check underneath your bed to make sure there's nothing that's going to interfere when you start drilling, any fuel lines, gas tanks, electrical items or anything you might damage. Our next step is double check our holes we just drilled because I'm going to take the bracket that's going to go on the outside of the frame and I'm going to come and I'm going to hold it in place. Now another set of hand that we have, our buddy in the bed, he's going to take our drill bit and go through the holes making sure they line up with our bracket. As you can see, they go through just fine. There's one hole and there's the other hole, so we know I have the bracket in the right place and we drilled our holes properly. Now that we know that our holes are properly marked we're going to come back with a step drill bit and we're going to be drilling these out with a 9/16ths. We're going to repeat that same process for the remaining holes we drilled. We're going to take our frame bracket again. Now this time when we put it into place we're going to be using this hole as well as this oblong hole over here and we're going to put our hardware in place. Now our hardware is going to consist of our M-14 bolt and flat washer along with a nut and retainer that's going to go on the inside of the frame. So we're going to come, take our bolt and go through the frame, through our bracket and then the nut's going to come onto the back side. If we take our bracket like this, place one bolt through our frame, we can come to the back side and we can put the other bolt through the frame. That way, at least it'll hold it up a little bit. Now we can come back to the back side and we can put on our retaining nuts. We're just going to leave them hand tight for right now. Now that we have this side down we're going to repeat the same process on the other side. Now if we come back to where we drilled our holes, as you can see it's halfway on the ribs in the bed, so the manufacturer did supply us with some spacer blocks. We're going to go underneath the truck now and we're going to put these in between the bet itself and the frame. I'll show you how these go in. So here's the holes that we have here on our passenger side, and I'm going to take my spacer block and I'm simply just going to push it in between the frame and our bracket and the bed, and you want to make dure that the notch is going towards the hole. It doesn't have the be exact because we're going to come back and put our hardware through and just make sure that everything lines up. Now we're going to repeat that same process putting the blocks in on the other side as well the one in the center. Now with our spacer blocks in place, we can go ahead and take our mounting bracket here and line the holes back up. Now we're going to be taking our carriage bolts and we're going to drop them down into each corresponding hole. Now with all of our carriage bolts put in place we're going to go back underneath the truck and with going to go in and install the rest of our hardware. So now that we have our bolts in place I'm going to take our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up towards our bracket here. I'm going to take our nut here. We can loosely install our hardware onto our bolt. We're going to repeat the same process for the remaining hardware. Now, if we come to our middle bolt here, we're going to take our spacer block followed by our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing towards the bed of the truck, and then finally followed by a nut, installed in that order. So we're going to take our spacer block going around our bolt, then our conical tooth washer, and then we can follow it up with a nut. Now that we have all of our hardware in place, I'm going to loosely put our front bracket in the truck bed itself and I'm going to take our unassembled fifth wheel adapter right here, I'm going to put in the slots, now we're going to take the back section and we're going to line it up on our forwardmost mounting bracket here. We're going to double check, make sure it's square on each side as well as square with the rear mounting bracket here. Now that we have our bracket in place and we know that everything's squared up with itself, we're going to go ahead and repeat the same process we did on the first one. We're going to mark our holes that we'll be drilling. Again two on each side, and the one in the center is going to be the one towards the cab again. Now you can see these are where our holes are drilled and we're going to repeat the same process, putting that spacer block in between our bracket here and in between the bed of the truck. Now we're going to repeat that same process on the other side as well. Now we can come back up top, put our bracket in place along with our unassembled fifth wheel. We can drop down our carriage bolts in the corresponding holes. Now you may need to take a screwdriver to help line up the bracket so that you can get your bolts in place. Again we're going to take our conical tooth washer with the teeth facing towards the bed of the truck and we're going to slide that over the stud coming out, then we're just going to loosely install the nut. Okay, now for our center here, again we're going to take our spacer block and we're going to go around the bolt just like that, then we're going to follow it up with a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up towards the bed of our truck. Finally we're going to come back with a 1/2 inch nut. Now with all our hardware in place we can go ahead and start snugging down our bolts, and I'm going to start snugging down the bolts attaching our mounting brackets to our side plates here, the four bolts on each side as well as the ones in the middle. You want to make sure your spacer block doesn't fall out when you're tightening them down. We're going to repeat that same process for the remaining bolts on our frame plates. Now with all of our hardware snugged down and in place we're going to come back and we're going to torque the bolts that we just snugged down first to the specified amount in the directions, and I'm going to me using a 3/4 inch socket to do this. Now we're going to repeat that same process for all of the remaining bolts. Now that we have all of our base rails torqued down we're going to come back to our M-14 bolts here in our side frame rails and we're going to go ahead and snug those down as well. We're going to repeat the same process on the other side. Now we're going to come back and we're going to torque our frame bracket bolts, and we're going to be using an 18 millimeter socket. We're going to torque it down to the specified amount in the instructions. With everything torqued down, that will finish up our install of the Reese quick install custom base rails and outboard installation kit for fifth wheel trailer hitches, part number RP56016-53. On our 2012 F-250.
