How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2012 Nissan NV 3500

Today on our 2012 Nissan NV3500, we're going to show you how to install the Hopkins Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket with Mounting Bracket. This is for the vehicle side. Its part number is HM40975. We're also going to be using the Tow Ready Universal Mounting bracket, Part Number 18136. Now to test out our lights, we're simply going to hook it up and run it through a tester, or you can use a small test light. We'll show you that on the 4-pole. First we want to have the headlights on the vehicle turned on, and we want to see our clearance lights light bulb light up. All right, perfect.

Now we can go to the left turn signal, should get a flashing signal. Now the right turn signal. Now, we can have them turn that off and apply the brakes. That should give us, as you can see, full signal on both of those. Next we'll have them test the reverse circuit.

All right, that's working fine. Finally, since this does have a brake controller setup, we can test our brake current and our brake voltage. Go ahead and slide the other. As you can see, it's passing through fine. Our 7-pole side's working perfectly. Let's test out our 4-pole side.

Now, if we're using our test light, we're just going to take the ground clamp. We'll connect it right to the highest stud there. That's going to be our ground terminal. All right. We'll hold that in place.

Now we can have the headlights turned on in the vehicle, and the one just below that, we want a constant signal from. All right. Now, we'll have the left blinker turn on. That should give us a flashing signal from the one second from the bottom. Right blinker should give us the same signal from the very bottom. Finally, by pressing on the brakes, we should get a constant signal from the one on the bottom and the one just above it. All right, everything's working as it should. We've got our 4-pole connection side, our 7-pole connection side, so it's a nice universal fit. Whatever type of trailer that we'll want to haul, we should have a good plug, or at least there'll be an adapter to make it work. Inside, you'll see a rubber grommet that's going to come back and make contact with that. That helps to keep out any moisture, dirt and debris, and things like that. Same thing you can see there on our 4-pole side. This is the really nice, easy, quick way to go from either what this would have, would be just the 7-pole that you'd have to use an adapter, to having both of them there handy, so no matter what we're hooking up to, we should be able to plug in pretty easily. In this application, our Nissan already has the tow prep package, so it already has the 7-pole connector, the plug-in connector here. It's going to go right into the back of our Hopkins plug. I just want to take this aside for now. We're going to bring in our long bracket. This is a universal bracket. It's made to mount with the hose clamp right around the hitch. We've kind of cut off the end of it here a little bit at an angle. As you can see, once we have this installed on the hitch, it would be sticking straight out to the side here, which is fine. Your wiring would kind of be turned out a bit. By making that modification and drilling those two holes, we're actually going to be able to flush it up some. We've got that where we want it. We'll bring our clamp around, take out as much as the slack as we can, then we just can that bolt closed. That'll grab on to the slots in the clamp, and we can get that tightened down. You'll see that clamp will conform really nicely right around there, so that'll be perfect. Now, we're going to take the hardware that's provided with the long bracket here. We'll drop it right in through the top, allowing it to come out of each hole location. These holes we've drilled also. This one, I'll allow 1/4 inch for those screws to come through, and I'll slide our bracket that comes with our wiring right up in place. I'm going to use a 1/4 washer just to make that hole a little bit smaller, and then we can place on our serrated locking nut. Do this on both of our screw locations. I'm just going to square the front of that up, and then we can tighten those down. All right. You can see, nice and firmly mounted. Let's just trim off the end of that clamp. To do this, we can use some tin snips, even some side cutters might work. We've got a little rotary tool we'll use. What we want to do is take just a little dielectric grease here and help keep any moisture or dirt and stuff like that from getting in here and affecting our contact points. This is a Lubrimatic contact grease that we use. The part number on it's 11755. If you don't have some, it's handy to have around. We'll just bring that plug end through, bring up our 7- and 4-pole, align it properly, and then push it in. That little tab there will click out, then you just want to give it a good push-pull, make sure it's firmly connected. We just slide that right back, and when you hear that click, you'll know that our plug's right in place there, nice and securely mounted. All right, with everything working properly, that completes today's installation of the Hopkins Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket with Mounting Bracket, Part Number HM40975, on our 2012 Nissan NV3500.
