How to Install the Malone SteelTop Square Crossbars Roof Rack on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Today, on our 2012 Toyota 4Runner, we're going to be doing a test fit on the Malone SteelTop Square Crossbar Roof Rack System. Now, this system is specifically designed to fit your raised rails on your 4Runner. I've already got it in place just to give you a good idea what it looks like. With this system you're going to be able to carry roof mount accessories, things like bike racks, kayak carriers, cargo boxes, and much more. You can see how they have those square bars. They're 50" long. They span across the roof of our 4Runner.

That way we'll be able to carry not one bike rack, but maybe two or three bike racks, or maybe even two kayaks. Now, these are entry-level. They're not going to be as aerodynamic as your Aero or Elliptical style bars, and they're going to be a tad bit louder than those as well. They are coated with grip on top, that way they don't harm or scratch our accessories when they're in place. Those grooves on top are going to provide good grip, that way they don't slide along our bars. Now, four towers keep our square bars in place. You can see that clamp on the inside there.

That too is rubber-coated. That way it doesn't harm or scratch our raised rails. Now, the towers are lockable, that way no one can remove it from our raised rails. It comes with two keys, but underneath, you can see here how it's going to hide and protect our hardware. It's going to deter theft and prevent those elements from getting inside.

When it's all tightened down, the covers go on. It's locked. Give it a good shake. You can rest assured that your roof rack system isn't going anywhere, and it's going to provide good security for your accessories. Now, looking at the Malone Roof Rack system from this view, you'll notice it's a tad bit more low-profile than some of the other options out there. If you like that low profile sleek look, this may be a great option for you. Now, that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get them set up.

I've already got that front square bar mounted to my raised rails, as you can see. The rear one installs the same exact way. All we have to do is set it in place. That's one thing I really like about this roof rack system is it comes preassembled right out of the box.I'm just going to gently rest it down over my raised rails. Now, we can really set these anywhere we want along our raised rails. We just want to make sure and set it up to where it's going to work best with our accessories. We want to be sure the crossbar spread is the same on both sides. Grab my tape measure and just measure center on center. That looks good.Once the crossbar spread is set up, we can then begin to tighten down our towers. By doing so, it's going to squeeze the clamp around that raised rail. We don't want to tighten them down all the way just yet. Just get it nice and snug. We still need to adjust that bar overhang. Let's get both sides loosely installed first. Now, we just need to be sure we've got the same distance from the end of the square bar to the beginning portion of the tower, here, on each side. You can use a tape measure for this, or you can just eye it up, whichever works best for you. I think we're actually pretty close there. We can go ahead and tighten them up the rest of the way. Now, there's no reason to over-tighten this. Just get it nice and snug, and give it a good shake test, and make sure it's not going anywhere. With everything tightened down, the last thing to do is to put our lock in place, and lock it up. Cool. With everything done, that's going to complete our test fit of the Malone SteelTop Square Bar Roof Rack System on our 2012 Toyota 4Runner.
