How to Install the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera on a 2010 GMC Sierra

Today on our 2010 GMC Sierra we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System. Part number is HM50002. Now, the need for this style backup camera is going to come for the truck or a vehicle that's not equipped with one, and you have trouble backing up to either your trailer by yourself or to other objects. With the camera system in place, as soon as you shift into reverse the camera's going to come on. See in the pattern that we currently have there it's more of a rectangular block system. That's going to be for backing up to items. Then we also, just by the hit of a button there we can switch it to the hitch line.

It's going to give us a little bit narrower area there. As we back up to our trailer, you can see in the background we want to keep the coupler directly in the middle. As we get closer it's going to give us that distance notification. You can hear that it's going to pick up a little bit as we get closer. We can see directly under our coupler, ready to hook up. The camera in this system is a really nice wide angle camera that's going to allow you to see a lot behind you.

As you back up to items the hitch ball is going to remain visible so you can see exactly when your coupler comes over top. The sensors are also fully adjustable. This allows you to adjust for the affect that you want. By moving your sensors down you'll bring the points in which the alarms increase or decrease closer. By moving them up, you're going to move that further away so you can get the ideal situation for your setup. Another thing I like is even with the ball in place it does not set off the alarms.

The alarms are designed to go over and out above that just a short distance, and then start activating back further on a more horizontal or a more flat level, rather than downward where our hitch ball might cause that alarm to stay on all the time. The monitor itself is a 3-1/2 inch display, which I feel is ideal for allowing us to see what we need to as we're backing up to our trailer or just backing up into a parking spot, but it's not so big that it's blocking our view of the road as we travel. Now, before we install them let's take a quick look over our components. This is going to be our plate holder. The license place actually slides up. The two holes here are going to align, and we're going to use the provided longer screws to then secure that to the vehicle.

You see the camera here in the middle, it's going to have some adjustment up and down to allow us to fine tune the picture we're seeing on our screen, and the same thing with our sensors here. We can kind of adjust those so we're getting the right feedback from the system. Our screen can mount a lot of different places. Sometimes center console, sometimes up on the dash. You can pick your preference. It's got the double sided tape there on the bottom to really get it held in place nicely. To make all of this work the only thing we're going to require is a working seven pole connection. This is going to plug directly in line between the existing connection at the back of our truck. As we put the vehicle in reverse that's going to power the system up and it knows we need to see what's going on behind us. The signals are going to run through an already existing wiring harness here. On one side the license plate bracket will plug in. On the other longer side of course, we've got the wire that we're going to run into the vehicle, and that'll plug in here. To mount the plate frame we'll remove our license plate. We'll then just slide that up into the plate frame there. The wire, you want to run that right over this edge. You see it's going to come out right down there, be able to make a good connection with it. Then we're able to resecure the plate with our screws. Now, we want to look behind the plug that's on the back of the truck, the seven pole plug. Directly behind that on the back side of the bumper we'll find a plug that looks very similar to this. There's a push tab on the top, and we'll push down on that and pull it rearward and separate it. Then we're going to use a little dielectric grease. This is a grease that'll go in here and prevent moisture from getting in there, causing corrosion. If you don't have any, it's part number 11755. We'll take the longer part of our T harness and that's going to plug right into that. Try to pull it apart, make sure it's connected really well. In the other side we'll add some dielectric grease too, and it can be plugged right back into the plug we removed the first one from. That's got the red and black wire that comes down off of it. If we follow the red and black wire to where it goes into this Y, we want to take the shorter wire side, and this is going to be plugged into the wire coming from our camera. You see the white arrows on them, you want to line those up. Again, a little dielectric grease won't hurt anything. Slide it firmly together and there's also going to be a little O ring, goes around that connection to help keep out moisture additionally. Just want to make sure that's compressed. Now we can bring these over. Going to use a zip tie, bundle up my red and black wire, tidy up that excess. Now I'm going to bring the red and black wire, which is our power and trigger wire and the wire coming from our license plate over, and we're going to zip tie that to the loom that plugged into with our T connector. Now we're going to begin running our other wire forward towards the front of the vehicle using plenty of zip ties to hold it in place. Just want to avoid heat sources, any sharp edges, anything like that. Typically, you'll have this large wire loom that goes all the way down the frame rail. That's a great spot to attach to to keep it up and out of the way. Now, as we come forward we're going to get just behind this forward cab mount. Along the frame you're going to see a cable. There's a grommet here. We're going to put our wiring right through that grommet. We're going to need to trim a section of it. Then we'll take our plug, we want to pass that through. Now we'll start at the back edge inside the driver side door here. Just need to pull up on this trim panel. We're also going to pull rearward on our kick panel. You can see the two fasteners there that you separate. If we right look under the carpet we can see our plug. Just pull that all the way through there. Once we know your slack's through we use some black silicone sealant. We want to go all the way around our wire, anywhere we cut that grommet just to make sure no dust or moisture can get in. I'm going to use a couple of zip ties and just follow along with this cable where we get up behind the dash area there. Now we can pull out on the bottom of our side cover. We have just three clips that we're separating. Now we'll run our wire from high up on that cable over the wire loom, and we can bring it out right in this area. I'm going to use a zip tie right around this black plastic part just to get a good anchor point there. You can see we got plenty of extra here. This is going to go around the back edge of the dashboard. Like we said, we're going to be using that double stick place to get it held in place, so I'm going to clear off a lot of the area here on the dashboard with some rubbing alcohol just to make sure we get off any dash protectant kind of stuff, get off any oil or any dirt that might be up here. Looks like a pretty good spot right there. That's going to be down and out of the way. It's not blocking the line of sight or anything, but still very easy to see. Once we've decided where we want it, we can pull that backing off of that tape and get it put in position. All right, looks like that will be a great spot. In that position, the lead coming off our monitor's going to be long enough to get in behind this panel, so instead of running our cable from the plate up around that area, we'll run the one from the camera and it's going to give us a nice, clean look. Just like in the back, we'll connect the two ends together. Use a few zip ties and get our excess up and out of the way. With everything working properly, that completes our installation of the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System, part number HM50002 on our 2010 GMC Sierra.
