How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're going to be installing the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller for one to four axles, part number HM47294. In conjunction with this install, we're going to use the Hopkins Direct-Fit Wiring Harness, part number HM53035. Our Direct-Fit Wiring Harness will plug directly into the manufacturer's brake controller port, and the other end into the brake controller pigtail. Let's start by plugging into the brake controller port. Now, once we've plugged into the port, we can take the other end of our wiring harness, and route it over to where we're going to mount the brake controller. Keep in mind when routing your brake control wiring, stay away from the moving components, such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedals. Additionally, as I route my harness, I'm also going to secure it with some zip ties as needed.

Now, we'll just go ahead and leave our pigtail hang, and the next step will be mounting the brake controller. To mount the brake controller, we'll use the brake controller brackets supplied with the install kit, and the two self-threading screws that will secure it. Now, once we have the bracket in place, we'll go ahead and secure our brake controller. There's two attachment points on each side, and four fasteners supplied with the install kit. I'll go ahead and get each of my fasteners started - finger tight - before I run them down. Now if we have our fasteners in place and our brake controller mounted, we'll take the pigtail from the brake controller and match it up with the direct-fit wiring harness and plug them together. Then we'll take the remaining portion of the pigtail and harness and secure it up underneath the dash.

Now, if we have all the wiring secure, we can cut off the excess from our zip ties to clean up our install look. We're now ready to test our brake controller. To test it, we'll go ahead and plug in our trailer braking so that we can supply a load to the brake controller as we test it. Now with the trailer brakes plugged in, we get a small red dot here on our display, indicating that we are connected. Now with our light indicating that we have a connection, we can adjust the gain, which is the power we send to our brake controller, with the top buttons here: plus going up, and minus going down. Now if we're in a situation where we need to apply the trailer brakes, without pressing on the brake pedal, we'll simply press the red hand knob, and it will apply our trailer brakes without pressing on the vehicle's brake pedal. One more feature of our Hopkins Agility Brake Controller is our sensitivity, so that we can adjust how quickly the brakes are applied, which will come in handy when we're using the same trailer, and it goes from a light or heavy load. And there you have it for the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller, install and set-up, part number HM47294, in conjunction with the Direct-Fit Wiring Harness, part number HM53035 on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
