How to Install the Hayes Genesis Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we'll be installing the Hayes Genesis brake controller, part number HA81790 and we'll be doing this in conjunction with the Hayes custom wiring adapter part number HA81796-HBC. The Genesis controller is for two to eight brakes or one to four axles. This is an electric over hydraulic brake controller. For proportional, this brake controller will activate immediately no pausing like with time delayed brake controllers. To begin the install, we'll first go ahead and locate the manufacturers brake controller tow port. The port is located near the fire wall behind the parking brake pedal. If we look at the top of the inaudible 00:00:54, we're we see the manufacturers wiring harness, we can locate the gray tow port plug, then we can take our direct fit wiring harness and plug into the tow port. Then, once we plug into the port, we'll go and take our pig tail and route it over to where we are going to be mounting our brake controller.

When routing your wire, best to stay away from any moving components such as the steering or brake assemblies, like the parking brake pedal. Once I have it routed, we'll go and secure as necessary. Next, we'll mount the brake controller bracket. We use the self-threading screws supplied with the install kit to secure our bracket. Now to secure the bracket, we're just going to go into the plastic trim underneath the dash. Located here on the driver's side where it is easily accessible to the driver.

Now with the bracket installed, we're ready to mount the break controller. The break controller has four different attaching points. We can use two to four of the self-tapping screws as needed to securely mount it. Now for this application, we're only going to need two of the fasteners because we're going to get a good secure mount. There, now we've got our good solid mount. We'll take the pigtail from the break controller and plug it in to our direct fit wiring harness.

As you can see, for this application, it automatically lights up when it's plugged in. We've got a DC for disconnected, then when we plug in our trailer wiring, we get the P, indicating that we've connected our trailer wiring and we have power to the trailer braking. For situations where we need to apply trailer braking without necessarily touching the vehicle brake pedal, we'll simply move the slide over and the further we slide it, the more power we send to our trailer brakes. Then in normal operations, simply hitting the brake pedal, our trailer break will work in conjunction with the vehicle braking. With that, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install and operation of the Hayes Genesis trailer brake controller, part number HA81790 in conjunction with Hayes custom wiring adapter, or pig tail harness, part number HA81796-HBC on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
