How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2012 Ram 2500

Today on our 2012 Ram 2500, we'll be installing the Bargman Fifth Wheel Gooseneck, 90 Degree Wiring Harness, Part number 50-97-410. Now to begin our install, we're going to go ahead and lower and remove the spare tire. This will give us more working room underneath. Now with our spare tire out of the way, we're going to go ahead and get into the back of the truck and find a suitable mounting location for our new seven pole connector. Now here on the driver's side we're going to mount the seven pole connector. When you look underneath the vehicle, you'll notice here at the bed seam there are two layers of sheet metal to go through on each side, so if you don't want to go through two layers of sheet metal, you have to move up here to the flat area, which is also where we're going to go. We're going to use our 1/4" pilot bit to make our hole.

Once we have the pilot hole made, we'll need to open it up to a two inch size, large enough that we can get the connector ends and the back of our new seven pole into our hole. Using our hole saw bit, we can make our large hole. Now once the cutouts made, we'll go ahead and take the T-connector end of our new harness and feed it through the cutout. Now if you're hole saw bits a little more than a little bit, you'll see it leaves an edge here around the cutout. Using a round file bit or just a regular file, we can clean it up.

Now we go ahead and install our T-connector through the hole. Be careful as you feed your connectors and wire through that you don't cut it on the sharp metal edges. Once we get them fed through go ahead and push the wire down and underneath the vehicle. We can take the seven pole connector, set it into position. Now; because, we've mounted our seven pole here in the recess portion of the pickup bedside or if we had space issues with the outside portion of the bed that the seven pole wouldn't fit all the way in, we can add the spacer block that comes with the install kit. It'll fit over the back of the connector and into place.

Then we can use the self-tapping screws provided with the install kit to secure it. Now with all four fasteners in place, holding the new seven pole move underneath the vehicle. We'll take our new T-connector end and re-reroute it underneath through our pre-drilled hole, through our drilled hole and run it up over the frame towards the middle of the vehicle and ultimately behind the bumper. Next we'll go ahead and locate the manufacturer's seven pole plug wiring here at the back of the bumper near the license plate. Press on the connector lock here at the two o'clock position. Remember the connector from the back of the manufacturer's seven pole plug.

We can then take the T-connector and plug in line with the manufacturer's wiring and then back into the manufacturer's seven pole. Before I make that connection I'm going to go ahead and apply some dielectric grease. We'll be using the Edelmann Dielectric Grease, Part number 11755. I'll go ahead and put some here on the new connector and the old. Then we can plug our wiring in. Firmly press them together to make sure it locks in place. Now with our connections made we'll go ahead and wrap up the remaining portion of our wiring and secure it here behind the bumper. To secure it, we're just going to use some zip ties. Now that we have the wiring secured, we'll go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. We can re-install the spare tire. Once our spare tires back in place that'll complete the install of the Bargman Fifth Wheel Gooseneck, 90 Degree Wiring Harness with Seven Pole Plug, Part number 50-97-410 on our 2012 Ram 2500.
