How to Install the etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch on a 2021 Toyota RAV4

Hi there, Toyota owners. Today on your 2021 Toyota RAV4, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install etrailer's class three two inch trailer hitch receiver. And this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. The cross tube is gonna be slightly visible here at the very bottom, but for the most part, it's tucked up behind the bumper. The only thing you're really gonna be able to notice is the receiver here at the back. It does stick out a little bit, so it is kind of noticeable, but I don't think it detracts from the looks to the vehicle too much.

It is a class three two inch by two inch receiver, so it's gonna be great for all of your towing needs. Whether you're wanting to use it for accessories, such as bike racks or cargo carriers, you should be able to use a four bike platform rack in here with no issue. And you should also be able to use a cargo carrier fully loaded up to the max with this as well. You'll secure your accessories to your hitch using a five-eights inch hitch pin and clip. Now, one doesn't come included with the hitch, but we've got plenty available here at etrailer, and you can also get locking ones to protect your investments that you place into your hitch.

On the bottom, we've got hoop style safety chain loops that has a very large opening that should accommodate just about every shape, size, and style of chain. Our little one has no problem, and our big guy here also clicks into place with ease. This hitch has a 600 pound tongue weight available to it, and that's the force going down on top of the receiver. And like we talked before, for our bike rack, should be able to load up all the way, even a platform rack. Your cargo carrier should be able to load those up to the max, the largest ones that we have here at etrailer, you should be able to take those and get those fully loaded up.

It also offers a 4,000 pound gross towing capacity, which is the amount that it can pull behind it. And that should be enough if you've got a small camper, maybe like a pop-up camper, smaller boats or jet ski trailers, you should be able to pull those just fine with it as well. It is rated for use with a weight distribution system. When using a weight distribution system, it doesn't increase your weights on either the tongue weight or your gross towing, they are gonna remain the same. But what a weight distribution system can do is it can help restore lost handling and braking performance from having your vehicle weighed down in the back.

By using a weight distribution system, you can redistribute that weight onto the front axle and return your vehicle's ride height to factory. And that's gonna restore a lot of that lost breaking and handling performance due to the way the geometry of the tires are when you have the front end sticking up in the air and the way the weight is loaded onto your brakes. We've got a lot of different styles of weight distribution systems here, so you can check those out to find the best combination between your vehicle and the particular trailer that you have. And now as always, I recommend you verify in your vehicle's owner's manual and ensure you don't exceed any of its towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the edge of our rear bumper, looks like we're measuring right at about five and a half inches. This is important when determining if your accessories will contact the bumper when placed into the receiver, and if they can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. And from the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube, it measures right at about 12 and a quarter inch. And this is important when determining if you need a drop, a rise, or a raise shank on your accessories. And since this one does it solo, I would recommend a raise shank on your accessories. Now that we've covered some of the features of our hitch, why don't you follow along with us in the shop and we'll show you how to get it installed. This is a pretty easy hitch that you should be able to have installed and less than half an hour. It is gonna require a special tool though, in order to get the bolts torqued down over on the passenger's side. We're gonna be covering in that in detailed though so you should have no issues following along with us We'll begin our installation underneath the vehicle. On both the driver and passenger's side, we're gonna have some factory weld nuts that have stickers covering them up, so we just need to get those removed. A small flat bladed screwdriver, or you could even use a little razor blade or something to just get underneath that sticker to peel it off. So we're starting on the passenger's side, this is our exhaust pipe here, there's the exhaust hanger bracket, this is the bottom of the frame. If we go around the side of the frame, and this is the outside side of the frame towards our, like the actual fender and bumper on the side of the vehicle, there's our stickers there, and there's one towards the front of the vehicle there. We're just gonna take our little screwdriver here, and it's gonna get underneath of it, and just pop it off of there. Once you pop it loose, usually you can just peel it off of there. So we're gonna get both of these removed on this side, and then we're gonna head over to the other side of the vehicle and remove the stickers over there. They're gonna be in the same location, just on the other side. Now, on the passenger's side here, on the bottom of the frame, you may or may not have the tie down hook on here. And if you do, you'll have to remove that, it'll be in the way. Our vehicle doesn't have it equipped, but it would normally be bolted in locations about right here. We can now prepare our hardware, we're gonna take each of the bolts and take a conical tooth washer and place it on the bolt. We want the teeth to face away from the head of the bolt, so that way, when it goes into our hitch, it's gonna dig in. They'll have two of these for each side for a pair, it's just easier to get your hardware fed in if you've already got those prepared. And now with an extra set of hands, we can lift our hitch into position. You may have to pull back on your fascia just a little bit there to get it to clear. Once we get it up in there, we can then take the hardware that we prepared, line up the holes in our hitch with the holes in the side of the frame, and then we can just get those started in there. Once we get one started on your side, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to install the rest of the hardware. Now that we've got one on each side in place, we can just kinda rotate our hitch until the other hole lines up with the weld nut, and we can just get the rest of that hardware installed. We can now go back and tighten down our hardware. On the driver's side, we're gonna use a 19 millimeter socket, zip that hardware down. And due to the tight clearances over on the passenger's side, we'll be tightening these down using a wrench. It's a 19 millimeter as well. Now that we've got all the hardware tightened down, we can go back and torque it to the specifications outlined in our instructions. And now on the passenger's side due to the tight clearances, you're likely gonna need a crow's foot in order to torque these down. You can get these at your local automotive store. And that completes our installation of etrailer's two inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2021 Toyota RAV4..
