How to Install the Draw-Tite 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter on a 2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on our 2005 Dodge Ram pickup, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Hi-Rise gooseneck-to-5th-wheel trailer hitch adaptor, part number 9480. First we'll need to assemble the unit, so we'll go ahead and take the head assembly bracket and install it onto the base unit. To secure the bracket to the base unit, we'll use the 5/8 bolt along with the 5/8 split lock washer. Special note: This is also where you'll get the adjustment for your head unit. We'll go ahead and set ours at the third level, or second from highest level for this application. With all of our hardware in place, we can now go ahead and tighten and torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions.

Next, we'll go ahead and install the head springs. This will help keep the pitch of the head and keep the nose down. We'll be using the hardware provided with our install kit, which will be the 1/4" bolt and 1/4" flat washer, spacer, and spring. We'll take the flat washer, put it onto the bolt, followed by the spacer, run it through the spring, and secure it to the head bracket assembly. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the opposite side.

Now with both of those installed, we ready to go ahead and take the entire base unit and set it into the vehicle. Here we'll take the king pin funnel into the base unit, securing it with the 5/8 conical tooth washer and 5/8 lock nut. Then we'll go ahead and set the base unit into the gooseneck hole, locking it into position. Next, we'll need to secure the side fastener on the king pin funnel. This will be a narrow bolt that we'll use the 5/8 pull wire to pull up from underneath the vehicle into position, and then secure it with a 5/8 conical tooth washer and nut.

We'll go ahead and take the bolt leader, feed it through the attachment point, and underneath the vehicle. Then we'll get underneath the vehicle and thread the narrow bolt onto the bolt leader and pull it up into position. Once we have it in position, we'll go ahead and remove the bolt leader, slide on our conical tooth washer, and then the nut. Now we can go ahead and tighten down both of the king pin funnel fasteners. Now with both fasteners tightened down, we'll go ahead and adjust the stabilizer strips underneath the legs of the base unit, and make sure they're in the valleys of the bed grooves.

Once they are, we'll go ahead and mark them, raise the base unit back up, and tighten them down. Next, we'll go ahead and install the end caps onto the base unit, covering up the hardware for the stabilizer strips. Now with that done, we're ready to go ahead and install the head unit onto the bracket. We'll set the head unit in place and take the pins provided to secure it into position, and then put on the safety clips. Next, we'll go ahead and install the handle to the head unit. Take the handle, slide it into position, and then drop the carriage bolt down through it, and secure it with a split lock washer and nut. And just like that, we are completely assembled and secured and ready to hit the road. And that does it for the installation of the Draw-Tite Hi-Rise gooseneck-to-5th-wheel hitch adaptor, part number 9480, on our 2005 Dodge Ram pickup.
