How to Install the Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we're going to be installing Draw-Tite's Activator Trailer Brake Controller and we'll be using the plug-in wiring adaptor along with it. This time delayed brake controller is going to be great if you need an entry level brake controller for your trailer. It has a manual slider that allows you to manually apply the brakes. This can be useful if you're sitting on a hill and you want to keep your trailer stalled, for testing purposes, and also to help bring your trailer back straight if it starts to sway going down the road. There's an output slider located here on top that varies the output intensity of your brake controller. You can also tell that based on the LED's illumination, it gets brighter with more output. On the left side towards the back, there's a sync slider.

Since this is time delayed, after a preset amount of time, it applies the brakes on your trailer after it receives a brake signal input from your brake pedal. To help sync this up with your trailer to get the best feel, you may need to adjust this so the brakes apply at the most appropriate time. You'll need to set this up and drive your trailer to get it set up right. Once you've got your time and power output set for your trailer, you should be good to go and you should never really need to adjust it again. We'll begin our installation by plugging in our wire adaptor. You'll need to access the fuse panel in the lower left kick panel on the driver's side. You need to release the lock tabs here on each side to pull your cover off.

I find doing the left side first a little bit easier, because it's harder to get to. So you get your screwdriver in there to release this tab and that makes it easier to reach over and pull these tabs off. We can now plug our harness into the fuse box here, we're going to plug it into this spot here just above this large connector opening, into the small one right there. And now we can route that wiring over where we'll be mounting our brake controller. We can now reinstall our cover, the wiring can poke out the top with all of the other wires.

So we just pluck that back and then slide our cover back on.Now we'll want to mount our brake controller. We'll start by mounting our bracket, we're going to be putting it in about this location. We'll use the screws that come with our kit, which will require a quarter inch socket to thread those into our lower part of our dash, here. So we're going to go ahead and get our bracket about where we want it. I like to center the screw in the slot on the bracket so we've got movement back and forth if we need it in the future.

And those will just run right in. Once you've got one in, you can make sure that it's sitting fairly level and put your second screw in.We can now install our brake controller into the bracket. We'll simply line up the holes in our bracket with the holes in the side of our brake controller and thread the hardware into it. And then we can tighten them down with quarter inch socket. We can now plug our wiring into our brake controller. And then you can take your wiring, tuck it up under the dash, and zip-tie it out, weigh it with some zip ties. You can pick up zip ties here at etrailer.com.Now you can hook up your trailer and test it out. When you hit the manual slider, you should see the LED illuminate and you should hear your brakes applying. And that completes our installation of Draw-Tite's Activator Trailer Brake Controller on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
