How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grande Cherokee, we'll be installing the Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller for 1 to 2 axles, part number 5100. We'll be doing this in conjunction with the Tekonsha Wiring Harness Adapter, part number 3045-P. Here's our direct-fit wiring harness. The gray end will match up with the manufacturer's gray plug when plugged directly into it. Once plugged in, we'll route the remaining portion of our harness over to where we'll be mounting the brake controller. Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal, or even possibly the steering column when routing your wire. As we route the wiring harness, we'll take the zip ties and secure it as necessary. We'll leave our pigtail hanging as we'll move to mounting the brake controllers.

To mount the brake controller, we'll use the bracket and hardware provided with the brake controller kit. We're going to mount it here underneath the dash. Once we have our bracket mounted and secured, we can install the brake controller. Again, we'll use the hardware provided. I'll get the two screws started and then run them down to secure the brake controller to the bracket. Once we have both fasteners in and the brake controller secured, we'll take our wiring harness and the pigtail from our brake controller and plug the two together.

Then we'll take the remaining portion of the harness and pigtail and secure it underneath the dash. Once the wiring is out of the way and secured, we'll go over some of the main features of our brake controller. On the side of our brake controller is the sensitivity slot. All the way forward is the least sensitive for light-weight trailers or trailers with no load. For increased sensitivity, we'll slide it back. That would be for trailers with excessive loads or if you're in a hilly terrain situation.

On the top of our brake controller is our gain which can increase the power going to the brake controller. Here is the manual braking. As you can see, it lights up, activating the trailer braking without having to press on the brake pedal of the vehicle. You can see it also lights up when we press on the brake pedal indicating that our trailer brake controller is working. There you have it for the install and operation of the Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller, part number 5100, in conjunction with the Tekonsha Plug & Play Wiring Harness, part number 3045-P, for our 2014 Jeep Grande Cherokee. .
