How to Install a Derale 8000 Plate Fin Transmission Cooler on a 2010 Honda Odyssey


Today on our 2010 Honda Odyssey, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Derale Series 8000 Plate Fen Transmission Cooler Kit. Now, this is what the cooler looks like installed. For video purposes, we do have the front bumper off. That way, you can get a better view and see what it looks like.Now, your transmission is really going to benefit from an extra cooler because it'll lower those temperatures and really prolong the life of the transmission. Very simple how the transmission cooler actually works. It's going to work in line with your factory cooler, so what happens is, transmission fluid will get pumped into one side of the cooler.

It will travel across to the other side, but during that process, all these fens, rather, are going to exchange heat because airflow is going to go across them. That cooled fluid is then going to come back down, back into the transmission.Now, one thing I really like about this cooler, the design is very similar to your other factory OEM coolers, so compared to some of the other ones, this one is much more durable, strong, and the fens have way less of a chance of getting damaged. Now, an added transmission cooler is really going to shine when you're towing, but it definitely will not hurt to have one for your regular just day to day driving.To begin our install, we're going to have to remove the front fascia. That way, we have enough room to get our transmission cooler installed. To do that, we're going to start by removing this plastic panel here.

Now, there's eight push pin style fasteners, and all you need to remove them is a flathead screwdriver. Kind of lightly pry up against it and just use your hand, pull them out. Just lift up and set it off to the side. All right, now here on the wheel well towards the bottom, there will be one Philips head screw, and you need to remove that. We'll do this exact same thing to the other side.Now underneath the van, there's going to be eight push pin fasteners all along the bottom edge of the bumper.

To remove it, just take a flathead, pry it down, and if you can't pull it out with your fingers, a trim panel tool does come in handy. Back up top, you'll notice this push pin fastener right here, and there's one just like it on the other side in the same position. We're going to have to pull these out, so you can just use your fingers, pull up, and work it out. We're going to do that to the other side.Now what you're going to do is come back to the wheel wells, and kind of pry your splash guard out of the way. You'll notice a screw right there.

We'll go ahead and remove that. Do that exact same thing to the other side. All right, now with an extra set of hands, we're going to go ahead and carefully pry the bumper away from the vehicle. Now, if you have fog lights like we do, let's make sure we get those unplugged.Now, there was a panel right here which I actually removed for video purposes to give you guys a better look. It does open it up a little bit, you don't have to remove it if you don't want to. Right here, these are our transmission cooler lines from the factory. Now, we need to find which one is the return line, and I went ahead and did that. The way you find which one is the return line is, you start the vehicle and let it get warm. The return line will be the one that's cooler to the touch. In our case, it's this one right here, the one closer to the passenger side.All right, so now we can pick a mounting location for our new transmission cooler. Now, since the return line is on the passenger side of the vehicle, we're going to go ahead and mount it somewhere in here. That return line is what we're actually going to be tapping into, so fluid will get directed to this cooler. Since we're somewhere in here, we'll go ahead and prep our transmission cooler and get it installed.Here we have our new line that came with our kit, so we'll take that and two included hose clamps, and just slide those over each end of the line. We're actually going to connect the ends to both sides of the cooler. Now, just a little trick, this hose is normally really tight and difficult to slide over the bar. What I found is if you take a screwdriver and just kind of pry the end of the hose, just to kind of loosen it up a little bit.Then what I like to do, you can use either transmission fluid or some lubricant, just be careful if you use lubricant not to get any inside of the cooler or the hose itself. You can just spray a little bit on the end, that'll help this hose slide over the bar. Now with the hose over the bar, we can take one of our worm gear clamps, we'll slide it over and tighten it up. That way, it clamps the hose to the transmission cooler bar. Now we'll go ahead and do the exact same thing to this side.All right, so now we're going to loosen up the AC condenser. That way, we can tilt it forward and attach our transmission cooler to it. To do that, there's a 10 millimeter bolt that is bolting this bracket to the AC condenser on each side. We're going to remove both of those with a 10 millimeter. We can just gradually tilt our condenser forward. Now we're going to attach our transmission cooler to the AC condenser. What we're first going to do is turn the cooler over to its back side. Then we'll take these foam pads that are included with the kit, peel the backing paper off, and we're going to line up the hole in the pad with the hole in the cooler. The back side's sticky, so just go ahead and stick it on. We're going to do that to all four corners.All right, now with all those stuck on, go ahead and flip it back over and slide it down. We're going to attach it to the AC condenser. Now, I kind of like to look at each individual row on the condenser and line it up with the flat edge of the cooler, just so it's on nice and straight. We're going to hold it there with our hand. We're going to take these clips and carefully feed them through the slots on your condenser. Push it tight.Now, there is four of these, one for each corner. What I like to do is get them started, then once I have them all ran through, I'll come back and put the backs on. Now we can take our backing caps, fish them over the plastic cable, and just push it tight to lock it in. Now, it doesn't need to be extremely tight, don't have to force it on there, just nice and snug to keep it in place. We'll do that to all four of them.Now with all of them on, we can trim up any excess cable. All right, with the transmission cooler installed to the condenser, we can go ahead and zip the condenser bracket bolts back in. We're going to come underneath the Honda and undo our transmission return line. There's a clamp right here, that's what we're going to take off. We'll get a pair of pliers, squeeze it, and pull it down. Now we can work this loose. Whenever this does come off, you can expect some transmission fluid to come out, so just be prepared for that.All right, with this disconnected, we're going to take that clamp that we loosened and completely remove it. We're then going to replace that clamp with one of these worm clamps that came with our kit. Slide that over, then we will take our fitting that came included with the kit, actually put it over the hose, and what I like to do is try to split the difference and run this fitting in about halfway. About right there. We can take our clamp and tighten it down.I went ahead and finished hooking up the lines. I'll show you how I did that now. Now, this line with the fitting that we put in it, this line is the line from the new transmission cooler. This comes down from the new transmission cooler, around the radiator, and over this fitting. Now put a worm clamp over it to keep it in place. Now, the other line that comes off of the new transmission cooler is right here. This one comes down from the new transmission cooler, around the radiator, and plugs into this line. This line was the one that we disconnected from this hose, so you have one line from the new cooler coming into this fitting and the other line comes down and plugs back into this original OEM line.Now, it's a good idea before we put everything back together to start your engine, let it run, and check for any leaks. That way, if we see any, we can address them now rather than later. It's also a good idea to check your vehicle's transmission fluid level, and if it's low, look in your owner's manual or contact your local dealer to figure out what type it needs. Now, once we verified that there is no leaks, we can go ahead and reinstall everything in the opposite order that we took it off. That'll do it for our look at and installation on the Derale Series 8000 Plate Fen Transmission Cooler Kit on our 2010 Honda Odyssey.
