How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to install the CURT TriFlex brake controller, part number C511240. We're going to use this in conjunction with the CURT custom fit wiring harness, part number C51446. This is a direct fit wiring harness that will plug directly into the manufacturer's brake controller port. Now to begin our install we're first going to take the direct fit pigtail with the matching plug and plug directly into the manufacturer's brake controller tow port. Once we click and lock it in place we can go ahead and route the pigtail. Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal. Once I have it routed into position, simply use a zip tie to secure it as necessary.

To be in position you'll route it near where you're going to mount your brake controller. Also, once I secure the wiring harness I'm going to go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up the install look. Now with our wiring harness installed and secured we're ready to install the brake controller bracket. We'll secure the bracket with the hardware provided. For this application I'm going to secure it here to the bottom of the dash. Once we have our bracket secured we can then go ahead and attach the brake controller to the bracket.

Again we'll use the hardware provided. We'll install each fastener finger tight until we have them all in place. Now once we have it secured we can go ahead and take the pigtail from our brake controller and plug it into the direct fit wiring harness. Then we'll take the remaining portion of our pigtail and harness and secure it up underneath the dash. Here with the single do not we can show that our brake controller has power and is not hooked up to any trailer braking. Go ahead and test it by connecting our trailer braking.

Now with the trailer braking plugged in you can see the display gave us the sign for trailer connection. We also have two lights here at the bottom indicating that our trailer wiring with braking is connected. Now to adjust our trailer braking sensitivity we'd use the thumb wheel here at the top of the brake controller. For manually stopping our trailer with the brake controller we'd use the thumb sweep. As you can see, the numbers will go up with the increased power that's supplied to the trailer braking. We'll also press on the vehicle's brake pedal and you'll see that the display will come on.

Now that we've tested both the vehicle brake pedal and the manual sweep we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install and setup of our CURT TriFlex brake controller, part number C51140, in conjunction with the CURT direct fit wiring harness, part number C51446, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
