How to Install the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Ram 2500

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 RAM 2500, we're gonna be taking a look at the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with R20 Slider, part number C16536. So here's what our 5th wheel hitch and slider look like when they're fully installed. Now, this is gonna allow us to tow a 5th wheel trailer with our truck. If you have less than a eight food bed, when you tow with the 5th wheel, the slider's gonna greatly benefit us because it's gonna give us 12 inches of travel, forward and back, allowing to have enough clearance so that our trailer is not gonna make contact with our cab. Now, if we come to the side here, we can see that it's in the towing position. But if we come to the lever and we pull out on the lever and slightly turn it, we'll see that there's a red notch right here. This is gonna allow the 5th wheel to slide back into the maneuvering position.

Now our 5th wheel hitch is gonna feature a Dual Jaw system, so it's gonna have a full, 360 degree contact with the kingpin, so it'll reduce some of the noise and make sure it has a nice, solid piece to connect to. Our head does articulate back and forth and front to back, which is gonna make hooking up a little bit easier, even if we're on unlevel ground. On our 5th wheel head itself, if you can see, there's gonna be three holes. Now that's gonna adjust the height of our head. It's gonna range anywhere from 17 1/2 inches all the way up to 21 1/2 inches. Our hitch is gonna feature a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight rating and is also gonna feature a 5,000 pound vertical load limit.

I just want to recommend that you always double check with your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure that your truck can handle pulling that amount of weight. Our slider and 5th wheel is gonna work with most industry standard, above-the-bed base rails, like we have here. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we got it in here. Now, to begin our installation, we're gonna need to mount our slider to our base rail. Before we do that, our kit's gonna come with some rubber pads and I'm gonna lay these in the corresponding holes that our 5th wheel's gonna line up with, that way it's just a little bit easier to handle and I don't have to worry about trying to get them underneath while I'm putting my 5th wheel down. I do recommend grabbing an extra set of hands because this base is rather heavy.

We're gonna drop it in place, making sure that our holes line up. With our slider in place, we're gonna take the included pins and clips and we're gonna go underneath our base inaudible 00:02:33 here, and we're gonna want to go through the hole that's going through our attaching point. Then we can come to the back side just like this and take one of the clips, and secure it down. Now, it may take a little bit of patience because it is going to be underneath our slider here, but we're gonna repeat that for the other three mounting points. We're gonna get ready to put the head in place now. The way we're gonna attach this is we're gonna have several holes here at the bottom.

Coming from the inside going out, we're gonna take 1/2 inch bolt, followed by a 1/2 inch lock washer, then finally a 1/2 inch flat washer, and we're gonna have two on each side. Now, I have my head sitting on my base, but if we notice, we're gonna have a pin and clip right here, we're gonna need to remove those for now. Remove the clip and pin, that way we can gain access and have enough room here to put our hardware in place. Once we get the holes lined up, we can loosely put our hardware in place, just enough to support it, then we get the rest of our hardware. Now, using a 22 mm socket, I'm gonna come back and torque all my bolts down to the specified amount in the instructions. We'll repeat that for all the remaining bolts. Now that our hardware is torqued down, we can replace the pin and clip on both sides. That'll finish up our look at the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with R20 Slider, part number C16536 on our 2016 RAM 2500.
