How to Install the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch on a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500

Hi there, GMC owners. Today on your 2020 GMC Sierra 2500, we're gonna be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, Curt's A16 Sliding 5th Wheel Head. This is a sliding fifth-wheel assembly which is great for vehicles that have a short truck bed. If you've got a full truck bed then you really don't need to worry about these and you probably won't need one ever. But if you have a short truck bed, the clearance between your trailer and the cab of your truck may be too small when making extreme turns. It's not uncommon for a fifth wheel that's sitting in this position here on our 90-degree turn, for that cab and trailer to connect here on the corners.

So to prevent from having a costly expensive repair, and giving you the most freedom when driving your trailer, you can get one of these units here that will allow you to slide it back when maneuvering. To do that, we're currently in the towing position, and we know we're in the towing position because the indicator here's not visible, and we can see the green one showing that we are ready to tow. When you're ready to slide it, simply pull out on the handle, give it a little bit of a twist, and then when you take off what'll happen is you'll drive away, your trailer will stay. So your truck will slide forward, this'll slide back. It locks itself into place, you're now in the maneuvering position, so you can make your turns easily.

When you're all done with your maneuvering, you'll simply pull it back out. And sometimes it does get a little stiff if you're not in the perfect alignment, so you might have to bump it a little bit. And then it pops out of there nice and easy. So if that happens in your truck, you might need to pop it into gear and then back into park just to kind of shift it a little. And then when you take off, and hit the brakes, it will return itself to the towing position.

And you do wanna make sure that whenever you are driving, in the tow position or in the maneuver position, that you see the green indicator before taking off to ensure that you are locked into one of the two positions. Your release handle is located over here. You have to pull out slightly to be able to release it. You can see there it's in its release position. There is a pin here that you can secure it in either the released or locked position.

We're just gonna go ahead and put it back. You will have to drive back in order to engage the kingpin to return the handle to its locked position. And this assembly here is designed to work with up to 16,000 pounds for its pulling force. So as long as you have a trailer that's that size or lower, you should have no problem with this. And that completes our installation of Curt's A16 Sliding 5th Wheel Head on our 2020 GMC Sierra 2500..
