How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to install the CURT Discovery brake controller, part number C51120. We're going to use this in conjunction with the CURT brake controller direct fit pigtail, part number C51446. Now to begin our install we're first going to take the direct fit pigtail with the matching plug and plug directly into the manufacturer's brake controller tow port. Once we click and lock it in place we can go ahead and route the pigtail. Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal. Once I have it routed into position, simply use a zip tie to secure it as necessary. To be in position you'll route it near where you're going to mount your brake controller.

Also, once I secure the wiring harness I'm going to go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up the install look. We'll start with the brake controller mounting bracket. We'll use the self-threading screws provided with the install kit to secure the bracket here at the bottom of the dash. Now once we have our bracket mounted and secured we'll go ahead and attach the brake controller to the bracket. Again, we'll use the screws provided. There are two, one for each side of the bracket, that will go into the pre-drilled holes here in the side of the brake controller.

Go ahead and get them both started finger tight and then tighten them down. There, now once we have the brake controller secured we'll take the pigtail here in the back of the brake controller and plug it into our direct fit wiring harness. We'll take the remaining portion of the pigtail and wiring and secure it underneath the dash. Now once our wiring is secured underneath the dash we're ready to go ahead and test our new brake controller. Now to test the brake controller I'm going to go ahead and plug in my trailer with trailer braking. This will allows us to put a load onto the brake controller, and when we hit the pedal you can see that we are applying power to our trailer brakes.

To adjust the power we can simply use the thumb wheel to turn it up or down as needed for our load on the trailer. Then for situations when you need to slow the trailer down or apply the trailer brakes without pressing the vehicle's brake pedal we can simply use the manual braking on the brake controller. Now once we're finished testing our new brake controller we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our CURT Discovery brake controller, part number C51120, in conjunction with the CURT direct fit wiring harness, part number C51446, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
