How to Install the Bully Dog GT Gauge Tuner on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Today on this 2012 Toyota 4Runner, we're going to install Part Number BY40450. It's a Bully Dog Performance Chip. First thing to do on our install we'll go to the Bully Dog website, go to the download section and then click on the update agent. We'll install that program on our computer. Next we'll go ahead and connect the micro-SD memory card to the computer. We'll go ahead and take out envelope and put in a card reader, then we'll plug into USB port into the computer.

Then we need to register a GT unit. After the information has been filled out we can go ahead and click update. Now, we'll go ahead and remove the card reader from the computer and remove the memory card from the card reader, then we'll install it into the GT. Then we'll power up the GT by connecting it to the computer with the included USB cable. Once we've plugged ours in, the Race 3 demo kicked in. The main menu can't be accessed during the demo, so we'll have to wait till it's done with the demo, then we can go ahead and go to the main screen.

Afterwards we'll scroll up to change vehicle, then we'll go ahead and put in the correct year, make and model. Once all the information is put in GT will load files and reboot to USB mode. All right, now we'll turn off all electronics on the vehicle like the radio, fan, anything else that will draw power from the battery. Then we'll go ahead and check the battery. We need to make sure that the battery is fully charged. In this case to ensure we have plenty of power we're using a jump box to help supply 12 volt power supply to the battery.

This also could be done with the trickle charger as well. It's a good idea to remove any aftermarket electronics before the installation. Now, we can go ahead and remove it from the computer and connect the GT to the vehicle. We'll connect the adapter plug to the vehicle diagnostic port. On our vehicle it's located on the left-hand side underneath the dash probably about 6 inches away from the engine dash looking up. Then we'll slide the power switch on the adapter plug to battery.

Then we'll connect the GT to the adapter plug. Now, go ahead and install the tune. We'll turn the key to the on position or run, but do not start the engine. At this point all we need do is follow the on-screen prompts. We'll go to the menu, then we'll choose install download. We'll have to verify the vehicle type and press yes. Then we'll read the disclaimer and press agree. Then we'll read the download requirements, we'll press more and then hit continue. Then you need to read the key cycle disclaimer. We'll just scroll down to the bottom then continue to accept. We'll have another reminder for your battery charger screen. Press connected when the charger is connected, which in this case you already have a charger ready to go. Double check the key is in the run or on position and then press continue. At this point the GT will double check the battery voltage coming into it to verify it has at least 12.1 volts. Once the data is retrieved, we'll go ahead and turn the key to the off position and press continue. Then we'll go ahead and continue with select a tuning. We'll read the tune selection screen and then press continue. Now, we can have a choice of three tunes. This case we're just going to keep it simple and use a regular tune and one that will make the shifting a little more aggressive. Once we're done with the tune the code below will display when the vehicle data has been successfully retrieved and the GT needs to be connected to the update agent. At this point we need to go ahead and disconnect our GT from the car, remove the SD card and then put it back into the card reader. Then put the card reader back into the computer and then go back to the update agent. We'll retrieve the tuning files by clicking on start. The update agent will display a progress bar. Then we'll click OK when the process is complete. Now, I'll take the card back out of the reader and then reinstall into the GT. Then we'll go ahead and reconnect the GT back to the card. Then we'll do the same thing in step one. We'll turn the key to the on or run position, but do not start the engine. Then we need to read the tune selection explanations, tap more and then press continue. We'll select the tune that we entered earlier, then press enter. The tune we chose will display the selective parameters. They appear correct, we'll go ahead and select yes and then move on. Once you have your keys in the run position, then hit continue. Once again, the GT will double check to make sure you have proper battery voltage. Then the download will begin. Now, this will take quite a few moments for it to download to the car. Once that's complete, we'll cycle the key to the off position and then press continue. At this point we can go ahead and start our car and drive around for at least 10 minutes starting and stopping to allow time for the vehicle to adjust. Now, we can permanently install our GT. Next we'll locate a key on fuse. This will be the fuse panel located on the driver side closer to the edge of the dashboard by parking brake, looking straight up. We'll use a test light to make sure the fuse is powered by when the key is only on. We found that the one that's closest to the edge of a dashboard with 50 amp fuse worked out just fine. Now, we need to remove the fuse and then we need to install the fuse tap. Now, this particular fuse, the fuse tap will not work. What we did was we replaced it with the regular mini fuse that will fit just fine and will work with our fuse tap. Then we'll slide the fuse tap over one metal prong of the fuse. Now, this is quite a tight fit. Next, we'll connect the power cable to the fuse box. We'll crimp the fuse spade onto the power wire. Then we'll slide the fuse spade over the fuse tap. Then we'll put the tapped fused into the fuse box making sure that the tapped side of the fuse is placed on the unpowered side. Then we'll connect the power cable to the adapter. We'll slide the adapter plug switch to key and we'll leave it alone for now. Now, go ahead and take the flexible mount for a GT and slide it into the socket in the back. Then we'll take it and attach it to the windshield. A suction cup, we'll push it against the windshield and then we'll push the lever down to lock it in place. Then we'll take our HDMI cable and run it along the edge of dash and hide it behind the weather-stripping. Then, we'll take a few moments to zip tie our wires. With that we have finished our install of the Bully Dog Performance Chip Part Number BY40450 for our 2012 Toyota 4Runner. .
