How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2003 Kia Sedona


Today on our 2003 Kia Sedona well be installing the ETBC7 brake controller install kit and our Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller, part number 90195. Well first need to disassemble the interior of the vehicle to gain access to the wiring. Our first step will be removing the rear threshold. To do this well remove the fastener caps. Once we have the fastener caps out of the way we can then go ahead and remove the Phillips screws fastening the rear threshold. Once we have those out of the way well go ahead and set the threshold aside for reinstallation later.

Our next step is removing the corner fasteners at the interior quarter panels. There are an additional two screws here on the drivers side. Next well go ahead and remove the rear taillight assemblies. To do this well need to remove the two fasteners that secure it to the body of the vehicle. Then we can gently pull out on the taillight assembly and remove it from its position.

Next well move inside the vehicle and pull back on the interior trim panels. On this application well need to get the four pole routed outside the vehicle. To do this were going to go ahead and cut off the end of the four pole connector, route it through the door pillar and route it outside the taillight wiring grommet following the manufacturers wiring. Next well take the four pole end that we routed out through the taillight assembly grommet on the drivers side and feed it down between the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle so we can gain access to it underneath the vehicle. Now with our harness connected and all our wires run and secured we can go ahead and reinstall the rear taillights and the interior trim panels.

Next well start assembling our new seven pole connector from our ETBC7 installation kit. First well attach the seven pole bracket using the hardware provided with our install kit. Next well go ahead and cut off the purple wire coming out of the back of the seven pole as it will not be used in this application. Then well go ahead and cut off the four pole end and strip back our wires so we can hardwire directly to the four pole that we just ran on the vehicle. Once we strip back the wires well go ahead and use butt connectors to connect the two.

Now with our butt connectors installed well go ahead and use some black electrical tape to tape up our wires out toward the butt connectors. With that done we can now go ahead and install the Tow Ready universal mounting bracket, part number 18140. Well attach it directly to the seven pole bracket. Now were ready to go ahead and mount it on the vehicle. Using the work gear clamp we can secure it directly to the cross tube of the hitch. With our seven pole secured to the vehicle well go ahead and make the connections, matching color for color from our four pole on the vehicle to the four pole that comes out of the back of the seven pole connector. Note we will not need to use the white wire coming from our four pole connector as it will get replaced with the white ground wire coming out of the back of the seven pole that already has a preattached ring terminal. Well go ahead and match color for color and secure our four pole wires. Now with that done were ready to go ahead and start hooking up the two wires from our grey duplex cable. To do this well strip back a few inches of the grey duplex cable and then strip back the two wires. Now were ready to connect them directly to our seven pole connector. It will be black to black and blue to white. With the preattached butt connectors on our seven pole well go ahead and crimp them down to secure them. Well go ahead and complete wrapping up our wires with some black electrical tape. Now well go ahead and start routing them over to the frame. Next, to assist in routing our wires were going to go ahead and attach a loom clamp, part number A0500. Using a self-tapping screw we can attach it directly to the body and secure our wiring away from the exhaust. With our wires secured away from the exhaust well go ahead and route the white wire to the frame and secure it with a self-tapping screw provided with our install kit. Then well follow it with the grey duplex cable as it will get routed along the frame up toward the engine compartment. When routing your wires stay away from excessive heat, such as exhaust or moving components such as the steering or suspension. Now we can go ahead and secure the remaining excess wire from our four pole connector. Using some black zip ties provided with our install kit well just secure it back behind the bumper cover. Next well go ahead and begin routing the grey duplex cable. For this application you can a pull wire to assist in routing it through the frame. A pull wire can be a stiff piece of wire. In this case well be using a piece of air tubing. Well take the air tubing, route it through the frame and then attach the grey duplex cable using black electrical tape to assist in pulling it through the frame and up toward the engine compartment. Now that weve got our wire routed to then engine compartment well go ahead and pull it up and secure it with a black zip tie. With our wire run up into the engine compartment and secured well need to go ahead and choose an appropriate length of wire so that we can run the white wire inside the vehicle to run directly to the brake control circuit that runs back to the seven pole coming out of the brake controller. Well go ahead and cut off the excess from our grey duplex cable, then strip it back and remove the sheathing. Next well go ahead and locate a spot to go inside the cabin of the vehicle. Since there arent any manufacturer grommets that will make it easy to get into the vehicle well need to go ahead and make our own hole. Well go ahead and drill it out using a pilot hole first, then enlarging the hole enough to get our bushing in place. Well be using the Spectro snap bushing, part number SWC8057. With our bushing in place we can go ahead and take our wire and feed it into the cabin of the vehicle. Now well take the leftover portion of our grey duplex cable and feed it from the inside of the vehicle out to the engine compartment. Well leave just enough wire so that we can make our power and ground connections from the grey duplex cable to the brake controller pigtail. Now were ready to go ahead and mount the brake controller bracket. Well choose an appropriate location and use the fastening screws provided with the install kit. With the bracket mounted were now ready to go ahead and start connecting our wires. Well start with the brake control circuit. Using our quick splice connector we can go ahead and make this connection now. For this application its a light tan colored wire. Now with our connection made well go ahead and start connecting the power and ground wires from our grey duplex cable to the white and black wire for our brake controller pigtail. Well use the butt connectors provided with our brake controller install kit. Next well take the white wire that we ran inside the cabin of the vehicle first, which comes from the seven pole connector, connect it with the blue wire for our brake controller pigtail. Now with all our connections made well go ahead and use some black electrical tape to wrap up our wires. This will help clean up our install look and protect our connection points. With that done, well now go ahead and take our brake control pigtail and plug it into our brake controller. Then we can take the brake controller and snap it into the bracket. Next, using some black zip ties well go ahead and secure the wiring up underneath the dash. Now were completed with our install in the cabin of the vehicle well move back to the engine compartment. Were back underneath the hood in the engine compartment. Well need to go ahead and mount the breakers for our circuit. Well mount a 40 amp breaker that will lead to the power wire for our seven pole connector and well be using a 20 amp breaker on this application for our brake controller. Using the self-tapping screw provided with our install kit well go ahead and secure them here inside the engine compartment. With our breakers secured we can go ahead and start routing our wires. Well take the power wire from our seven pole connector, run it to the breaker, cut off any excess and strip it back and add a small ring terminal. Then we can secure it to the breaker using the star washer and nut. Well just run the nuts down finger tight at this time. Now well go ahead and take the grey duplex cable, and well need to mark it in two spots, first where well need to strip back the grey duplex cable to run the power wire to the breaker, and second, the longer cut which will cut off any excess wire so that we have the ground wire running directly to the negative battery posts. Well go ahead and cut off the excess and then strip back the grey duplex cable. Now well cut off the excess from the power wire, strip it back, add a small ring terminal and attach it to our 20 am breaker. Now well go move back to the ground wire, strip it back, add a large ring terminal and secure it to the negative battery post. Our next step will be running two leads from our breakers to the positive battery terminal. Note these leads are called the hot leads, will run to the copper side of the breakers. Well take any leftover wire that we cut previously, strip back two ends and add two small ring terminals. Then well go ahead and route them over to the breakers from the positive battery terminal and secure them with the star washer and nuts. Now we can go ahead and tighten them down. Next well go ahead and cut off any excess length, strip it back and add two large ring terminals so we can secure it here directly to the positive battery post. Once we install the ring terminals well go ahead and secure the nut on the positive battery terminal and reinstall the cover. Now with our power hooked up this will complete the install of our ETBC7 brake controller install kit, our Tekonsha P3 brake controller, part number 90195, in conjunction with our Tow Ready short bracket, part number 18140 and the Spectro snap bushing, part number SWC8057 on our 2003 Kia Sedona.
