How to Install the B and W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch with Slider on a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500


Today on our 2017 GMC Sierra 3500, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the B&W Companion OEM Fifth Wheel with Slider for Chevy and GMC Towing Prep Package, part number BWRVK3770. Here's what our fifth wheel with slider looks like when it's fully installed. And since we have a short-bed truck, it's going to allow us to tow a fifth-wheel trailer. And have enough clearance to make those turns, without having to worry about making contact with our cab. If we come to the handle right here, start in the lock position, and we can rotate it to the unlock position. Then we're going to have 12 inches of travel so the fifth wheel can go farther back towards the tailgate. We can make our turn, and then once we straighten out, we can again come to the handle, unlock it, and it'll slide back into the towing position. Now this fifth wheel slider is designed to work with the GM and Chevrolet factory prep package, and that's what these handles here are. It's just going to sit in and lock into place.

Our fifth wheel head is going to feature a dual draw system. So it's going to have a full 360 degree kingpin contact, which is going to reduce some of that noise we hear when we're going down the road. Underneath our head here, where it mounts to our base, we're going to have two large polyurethane bushings. Which not only are going to give us a secure place that our head's going to mount to, it's also going to provide a little bit of cushion and cut down on some of that noise and rattling when we're driving down the road. Our handle is going to feature a tethered safety pin, so we don't have to worry about losing it. And when we're ready to hook up, we can simply rotate the handle back, and there's actually a small notch back here that we can put our safety pin in that'll leave our fifth wheel open so we can get ready to hook up. Once we do bring our trailer in and the kingpin makes contact, it's going to push. And then we can rotate our handle back, and then again making sure it's secure with the pin and clip.

We do have three height adjustments. It's going to be a little hard to see in this particular position, but these arms here are bolted to the inside of our base. Now they're going to go at the lowest setting, the 17 inches. The middle setting is going to be right around 18 inches, and then the highest setting is going to be 19 inches. Our hitch is going to feature a 5,000 pound vertical load limit, along with a 20,000 pound gross trailer weight limit. Now I do want to mention, you always want to double check your vehicles owner's manual to make sure it can handle pulling that amount of weight.

And you always want to go with the lowest setting of your entire towing system. Now our hitch is going to feature a steel construction with a nice gray powder coat finish. Which is going to set it apart from most others, because most others are going to have a black finish on it. Although our fifth wheel is rather heavy since it does use the factory prep package. If you have an extra set of hands you can pull the head off, pull a couple of pins, rotate some handles, and then lift the base out. And you'll have full-bed access in just a few minutes. Now that we've gone over some of the features and benefits of our hitch, let's show you how we get it installed.

To begin installation, we're going to come to the bottom of our base here. We're going to pull the pin and clips out, and we're going to rotate the handles so they're facing outward. We're going to need to do that on all four points around the base of our hitch. We're going to take our base, and we're going to set it into the puck system in our truck. Once we have our base securely in the puck system in our bed, we're going to take the handles and rotate them into the locked position. Once we have our levers adjusted, we can go ahead and re-secure them with the pin and clips. With the base mounted now we're going in and mount the arms, so we can put the head on top. We're going to have different positions that we're going to be able to mount the head, and in our application we're going to be using the lowest setting. Now we can take our arm, and again in our application because it's a short-bed truck, we're going to take the straight part of the arm here, and that's going to be going toward the tailgate so that it sits farther back, giving us that much more clearance before our trailer hits our cab. So at the lowest setting, we're going to take this bottom hole on our mount here, and we're going to line it up with the very bottom hole on our base here. And the way we're going to attach these, I'm going to take a half-inch bolt and a half-inch lock washer, and we're going to line up holes. We're going to secure them into place in all four of those holes, and we're going to have four per side. We're going to get the other side in as well. Once we have all of our hardware in place, come back using a three-quarter inch socket, I'm going to snug it all up. Again using a three-quarter inch socket, I'm going to come back, and I'm going to torque all my hardware down. And you're going to get that torque value from our instructions. We're going to repeat that for all of our hardware. We're almost ready to put the head on our fifth wheel, but we have a few minor things we need to finish up. We're going to have a spring clip, and if we notice one end is going to have a small ear that comes off the loop. We're going to line up the hole in our clip with the tab that has it coming off of the loop. And then we're going to take our quarter-inch bolt. It's a very short bolt. We're going to go through the bracket and the spring. Then we're going to secure it with a lock nut on the back side. Now I'm going to take two 7/16" wrenches and tighten it up just so it's a little snug. You don't want to crank it down right now, because we're going to have to mount the spring clip to our arm. So you can take two 7/16" wrenches, one to hold the bolt, and then one just to snug up the nut on the back side. The metal clip we're going to see, has a slight section, and that's going to mount to our arm here. When we get into position, the top piece of this rubber here, we're going to want to have about a half-inch of clearance between the top of our spring here and the bottom of our mount. So once we find a general spot that's about there, you're going to want to push firmly to hold it in place. Now we're going to take either a hammer, a rubber mount or whatever you have, and we're going to need to drive this onto the arm. We're going to take the head now. We're going to want to lift by these handles and get ready to put it in place. So where our handles are, is going to sit right over those rubber pads. If you notice we do have pins in place, so we're going to remove the clips and pull the pins out and let them hang for right now. We're going to do that on both sides. Now if we come back to those handles, we're going to lift up on the handles while pushing down on the head of our fifth wheel. Then we can see that they lock back down, and that's going to keep the head secure. And for secondary securement, that's where the pins and clips are going to come into play. So we can go and reinstall those. One final step, we're going to need to attach our handle. Now we're going to have a tethered pin, we can go ahead and remove the clip holding it in place, and we can pull the pin out. Now we're going to take our handle with the label facing up and the handle towards the back of our tailgate, and we're going to slide it into position. And it's going to automatically line the holes up. Now I mentioned that our safety pin does go in this first hole, so we can go ahead and put it back in place. That way we don't have to worry about getting mixed up and confusing which hole we put our hardware in that's going to attach our handle. We're going to have a couple of hex bolts here. We're going to drop them down through the holes, and then we can come back and take our flange nuts and attach them on the bottom. I'm going to come back and using a 7/32" allen socket and 9/16" wrench, I'm going to snug up my hardware. And that'll finish up our look at the B&W Companion OEM Fifth Wheel Hitch with Slider for GMC and Chevy Towing Prep Package, part number BWRVK3770 on our 2017 GMC Sierra 3500.
