How to Install the B&W 5th Wheel Base Rail Kit on a 2014 Ford F-250

Today, on this 2014 Ford F250 Super Duty, we're going to review and install the BMW Customer Base Rail and Installation Kit, part number BWRVK2401. Now, the BMW fifth wheel installation kit will allow you to install a fifth wheel in the back of your truck. As you can see here, we have the rails already installed in our truck. Now, this is compatible with the BMW Patriot fifth wheel. You notice on the rails we have 3 sets of slots in each rail. This will fit a variety of different 5th wheels that are out there this will also work with versions of a goose neck adapter as well. These cross rails are constructed from steel with a powder coat finish. In this case it's a nice change of pace with traditional black finish. Let's go ahead and look at the frame brackets that come with the kit.

Same steel construction with the gray powder coat. These are designed to work with a preexisting holes in the frame of the truck. That will minimize any drilling necessary aside from drilling into the bed for the cross rails. This also eliminates a lot of guess work on attaching the brackets to the frame, and also reduces the time to install as well. Next I'm going to show you how to install on our truck. To make things easier to work underneath the truck, it's a good idea to go ahead and remove the spare tire, because we'll have to get underneath the truck to get access to hardware. Now I also remove the exhaust.

There's a bolt here, that goes through the bottom, and also one going through the side as well. Simply remove those, got it out of the way. Follow the exhaust up back to the first flange here. There are three bolts. Use a 15 millimeter socket to remove them, also remove them from the rubber hangars as well.

Take this whole assembly off. It makes things a lot easier getting underneath the truck. To remove the rubber hangars from the exhaust, it's always a good idea to spray them down with some kind of spray lubricant. Something in this manner, and then you can actually pry them off relatively easy. Our first of our install, is to go ahead and get in the bed of the pick up, and we need to make a couple marks in the bed to place our first rail. Now going by instructions, we're going to measure from the edge of the rail. This edge right here.

We'll measure back as described in the instructions. Go ahead and make our mark. Same thing on the other side. Just get them as wide as possible. Let's go ahead and put our first cross rail over our marks. Now we've got our distance from the rear of the truck to the front here. I'm going to make sure it's even left to right. This ridge right here works pretty good as a measurement to go by. Now we'll go ahead and mark and drill our holes out. Our rail's going to use these two holes here and here. This is going to be the same on the other side, and well as the rail going towards the front of the truck. I like to use a half inch drill pit to just make a mark into the bed. Then we'll drill a very small pie bit one eighth of an inch. Now when you drill you always want to be mindful of what's under the bed of the pick up, especially as the closer you get to the front of the cab. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process on the other side of the rail. All right, let's go underneath the truck. We're on the driver side here. We've got one of our frame brackets. The slot right here goes towards the back of the truck and fits around the hat channel underneath the bed. You'll notice that these tabs right here will face towards the outside. Let's go ahead and put this into place. I'll lock that drill bit in this side here so we can easily line it up. We'll go ahead and put it up into place. This slot's going to line up with this existing hole here. And this existing hole hear towards the front. With my drill bit in place here, we want to make sure it hits the center of the slot. We can look up under this hole here we drilled out and make sure that it lines up. Once you're satisfied with the placement of the holes we'll take our frame bracket back down. Let's go ahead and drill our pilot holes out now to 9/16ths. If you want to clean up the edge of the holes a little bit, you can use a step bit. Let's go ahead and put our rail back into place. Line it up over the holes. Let's go ahead and take four of these carriage bolts right here. Drop them through the holes on both sides. One last hole drilled in our rail is going to be in the center. It's going to be this one right here. That's why I have the bolts holding it for me, and I'll use it as template to drill it out. I'm using a half inch bit for starters, then I'll remove the rail and finish up with the 9/16ths. Rail back into place, same carriage bolt, we'll drop it in. Now we need to go back underneath the truck, and once again on the driver side, we need to install this spacer block here. Now you notice between the hat channel and the top of the corrugation here there's a gap. This block needs to go in there so you have constant metal to metal contact. Otherwise this will crush the bit if we don't do this. This has to fit inside here. Pretty much always, you've got to use a pry bar to work the hat channel around to get it to work into place. I typically bend it as much as I can, and try to slip this into place. Generally, I tap it in, and then knock it where the bolt is inside this gap here. To make things a little bit easier, push the bolt back up out of the way. We'll do the same thing on the other side of the hat channel. With the block in place we'll go ahead and drop the bolt back in. We'll go ahead and repeat this same process with the blocks on the other side of the truck. Now I'm going to go ahead and mount our frame bracket loosely to the frame. We're going to line up our bolts with these two holes. They're going through the bed. We'll go ahead and install our hardware into the hole here, which will be this half inch hex bolt, and a flat washer. Just let that rest for now. This doesn't quite line up because we had to fluff the metal up here, we'll use a screwdriver to pry it back up, then install our hardware. On the inside of the frame, still on driver side, we'll add another flat washer, a lock washer, and a nut. Of course this is the easy side. The one going towards the front of the truck is going to be a little bit harder to get to. Give me a moment to go ahead and install those. Next we'll go ahead and add our hardware that goes from the top rail through the frame rail. First it's going to get this off set block. A flat washer. A lock washer. Then a nut. There's not too many threads left over here, so you're going to have to kind of push up on it. What I think I'll do is actually use this one to help pull my rail up a little bit, to get as much thread as I can on this one. Temporarily put the nut and the flat washer. Make sure this bolt now takes some of the weight, and I'll undo the other one. We'll put the correct hardware in place. Done with our driver side here. We'll go ahead one more time over on the passenger side. Let's go ahead and go to the bolt in the center of our rail here. Don't forget to put the block in here like we did before, and then we'll add our hardware. Square block, flat washer, lock washer, and nut. Next up, we can go ahead and for for a second rail. This rail will go up towards the cab of the truck. Now we have to use the fifth wheel hitch that we're going to use with our truck to place a second rail. In this case we'll be using part number PWRBK3255. Put the rail up, roughly where it's supposed to be. Take the base of our fifth wheel, we don't need it fully assembled, we just need to the base so it's easier to work with. Now once we have it in place, we'll do a couple things. One, pull all the way back and take the rail and push it all the way forward if you have any slack in there. You should have a little bit of wiggle room so you can take it in and out. Just as before we're going to measure from here to this edge. Make sure it's equal on both sides. Once we're satisfied with the placement of our second rail, once again, we'll go ahead and mark and drill our holes, just like we did before. Make our mark, pilot hole, and we'll double check underneath. Also, before I drill into our final hole size, we'll go ahead and double check with out drill bit. Here's out drill bit right through the center of the bracket. That's what we're looking for. Just for reference, here's our other hole that we drilled here. Now at this point we'll go ahead and get ready to install our hardware just like we did with the back rail. Once again we're going to have to put our block in between the hat channel here and the sheet metal. Yes, we're going to have to use the screw driver one more time to help distort the metal a little bit to get it started. It does help to have the bracket as loose as possible as well. We'll get it started. Now let's go ahead and tap it into place. Don't have to have it perfect for now, because we can always line up the block with the screw driver from the top down. Then after that, we can drop our bolts in place. We're going to repeat the same process on this side here as well. We don't have to worry about the frame back, but we still have to bend this down, get the block inside, and install the same set of hardware. With the spacers in place, we'll go ahead and install our hardware, and our rail, just like we did before. Our bolt's back in place, let's go ahead and put the base for our fifth wheel onto the rails. Put our hardware back underneath. Same as before. Block, flat washer, lock washer, and nut. We'll do this one more time with the bolt in the center of the rail, also. Now we're almost ready to tighten down our hardware. What I like to do next is go ahead and put the pins through the hitch to make sure it keeps it in alignment as we tighten up the rails to the frame brackets. Now I'm going to start tightening down our hardware. We're going to do it in the following sequence. We're going to do the bolts from the cross rails, to our frame bracket. Then we'll do the frame bracket to the frame last. We'll be using a 3/4 socket on all of our hardware. Now I'm going to get these tightened for now, we'll come back and torque them down as specified in the instructions. We're now finished for the BMW custom based rails installation kit for 5th wheel trailers. Part number BWRBK2401, on this 2014 F250 Super Duty. .
