Today we are going to be working on a 2009 Ford Taurus X. We will be installing Curt hitch part number 75299. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you when ing accessories for your new hitch, such as a draw bar, bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most point of the bumper is 3 inches. And from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14-1/2 inches. Now let us go ahead with the installation. 0:28
Our first step is going to be to remove the two existing fasteners that hold on the metal exhaust bracket. While we are here at this exhaust bracket, we are going to go ahead and actually remove the metal hanger from the rubber insulator. Before I do that I want to hit it with a little bit of penetrant or lubricant for ease of removal and reinstallation later. So for the ease of the installation of this hitch, I am going to chose to go ahead and remove this exhaust hanger also. Before I do that, I want to put a safety strap across my exhaust just to make sure it does not fall too far. Now that we have that out of the way, it will allow us to lower the exhaust as needed to get our hitch in place. 1:13
Our next step is going to be to get a fastener through this oblong hole here in the subframe. In order to do that, we are going to run our bolt leader, which is provided in the kit, up through the access hole and out of the oblong hole in the subframe. Start here at the oblong hole. Come out through our access hole so we can pull our block and bolt through. We will go ahead and feed on our 1 inch by 3 inch block. And then we will thread on our bolt. We are just going to push them up into our access hole. Then we are going to pull them down through our attachment point. Once we have them in place, we can go ahead and remove our bolt leader. You can see here that there is another hole in the subframe. This is going to be a side attachment point. What we are going to do here is put our bolt leader in place. You will see here our shorter 1 inch by 2 inch block. We are going to feed it on to our bolt leader and the thread on our bolt. However, we are not actually going to pull the bolt through until after we have our hitch in position. 2:29
Here on the passenger side, our attachment points are going to be here on the side of the subframe and these two on the bottom of the subframe. These holes are not threaded so we will be using the self-threading bolts to make threads in these three attaching points. I am going to go ahead and do that now before we put our hitch into position. Now that we have the passenger side prepped and ready for the install, we can go ahead and put our hitch in position. I am going to go ahead and start on the passenger side. We are going to use the same bolts that we used to create threads and conical tooth washers. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch. It is finger tight at this time until we get all of our fasteners in place. That will hold the passenger side for now. Let us go over to the driver side. Here on the driver side we are going to go ahead and push our hitch into position, being careful not to lose our bolt and block. We want to come back here to the side fastener and pull our bolt and block through. We will go ahead and take our bolt leader off now. We will go ahead and slide on our conical tooth washer. Install our nut. 3:43
What we need to do is remove the angle off of our exhaust bracket. I am going to go ahead and set this up in a vice and cut off the angle. Now we will go ahead and reinstall it onto the rubber insulator. Then what we are going to do is take this 1 by 2 inch block. It is actually going to get smashed in between the metal exhaust hanger and the hitch. Now that we have our exhaust hangers finger tight, we are going to go ahead and take this opportunity to run all of our fasteners down. Now that we have all of our fasteners tightened, we can go ahead and torque to specifications. I am going to go ahead and reinstall that forward exhaust hanger that we took down earlier. And that will complete the installation of Curt hitch part number 75299 on a 2009 Ford Taurus X.
