Today on this 2004 Jeep Liberty we are going to install part number 13044 from Curt. The first thing we need to do on our vehicle is to lower the exhaust so you can get a little more working room on the passenger side of the vehicle. We are going to spray down the rubber exhaust hanger with some lubricant and just pry it off and get it out of the way. Next we will install a strap onto the exhaust just to help hold it out of the way a little bit because there is one hole in the frame that is just curved by the exhaust pipe. We just need to move it over just a little bit. Now we can show you the locations of where the hitch is going to bolt up on to the frame. 00:34
Our next step is to take the threads and clean them out because they are pretty rusted. Basically we are going to spray it down with some lubricant and we are going to take one of the hitch bolts and just work it in and out just a little bit just until you get it started. Run it a turn or two and then back it off. Then occasionally add some more lubricant and as you can see we have got a lot of junk to come out with the threads. The older the vehicle the longer this process will take. You want to repeat this process in all of the holes and make sure you get the bolts threaded in by hand and then we can install the hitch. 01:05
At this point we can install the hitch. It will be a good idea to have an extra set of hands at this point to help hook the hitch up and then thread the bolts into the frame. However we have got one bolt on each side. We will leave everything loose so we have enough wiggle room to install the rest of our hardware. With all of our hardware started we will snug down the bolts and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. At this point we will reinstall our exhaust by slipping the rubber hanger back on to the vehicle. With that, that will finish our install. Now we have got our vehicle off the lift. We will give you a couple of measurements on the hitch that will help you pick out some accessories for your vehicle. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground is going to be 17-1/ 4 inches and then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of the spare tire we are looking at 15 inches. There you have it for part number 13044 from Curt.
