How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2003 Toyota Camry

Today we are going to install part number 12339 from Curt, and we are going to install this on a 2003 Toyota Camry. Before we begin our install, we will show you exactly where the hitch will mount up on the vehicle. First off, on the passengers side, it will mount up on these three bolts right here. We have taken these three bolts - one, two, three - and those will be replaced with the bolts that came with the hitch. Moving over to the drivers side, there will be couple of different varieties, depending on the vehicle you have. They will always have these two holes right here. On some varieties, there will be no holes here or maybe two existing holes. Or, in this case, there is actually one hole underneath the sticker right here. You will not actually know until you look underneath the vehicle. And there is a threaded bolt hole. So, in this case, we will only be using these three holes.

Now these two holes here have been sitting out in the elements for quite a while now, so we are going to have to take some time to clean those out with some WD-40, your favorite cleaner, a wire brush and then take your tool and go ahead and run the bolts in and out a few times just to make sure you get everything out before you put the hitch in place. As you can see, there was a lot of crud that was still up there with the bolt. Score it out a couple of times and then you are ready to go.

The next thing we are going to do is lower our muffler out of the way so we have good clearance to get out this bolt here. We will unbolt these two like we are supposed to, and then there are two more bolts on the other hanger here that will allow us to lower the muffler a bit and give us some better work room. We tied this muffler off and pulled it off to the side, and now we have got easy access to the last bolt, and we will go ahead and take that off.

At this point, we can go ahead and start installing the hitch. What you can do is on the passengers side is slide the passengers side of the hitch above the muffler. That will help hold it in place while you secure the drivers side. But if you have got an extra set of hands, that is always a good idea. All right, once we have got all our bolts started, we can go ahead and snug them down. Once you have your bolts all snugged down, then go ahead and check the instructions for proper torque. All right, the last thing to do is reattach our other bracket for the muffler back up to the body. You want to check your exhaust to make sure it is secured back up in position. And there you have it for part number 12339 from Curt.
