How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2003 Jeep Liberty

Today on this 2003 Jeep Liberty, we are going to install part number 13044 from Curt. First off, we will go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up on the vehicle. It is going to be using these three existing threaded holes in the frame. Now, since this is an older vehicle, we are going to have to take some time out to clean up the threads on the vehicle here. And we are just looking at the driver side. This is going to be identical, as well, on the passenger side. The first step to do is to go ahead and spray it down with some lubricant. Let it soak in a little bit. Then use one of the hitch bolts to help thread in a little bit and try to work some of that dirt and grime and rust out of there. We will go ahead and repeat the same process on the rest of these bolts. This will take a considerable amount of time to clean these out. 0:43

Alright, now this back bolt here is partially covered by the exhaust, so it is kind of a pain to get to. So, it might be a good idea to go ahead and move the exhaust hanger. OK, once we have our bolt holes all cleaned out, we can go ahead and install the hitch. We will just use a couple bolts to hold it in place. And it would be a good idea to have an extra set of hands to help hold it up there and thread the bolts at the same time. With all of our hardware installed, with the hitch still loose, go ahead and move the hitch around if you can and kind of center it on the vehicle as best you can. And then we will go ahead and snug down the bolts. Alright, now that we have all of our bolts snugged down, go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions. 1:28

Now that we have the vehicle off of the lift, let us give you a couple of measurements that will help you in ing accessories for your vehicle. From the top of the receiver opening down to the ground is 17-1/2 inches. And then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer edge of the tire, we are at 15 inches. And with that, that will finish it for part number 13044 from Curt on our 2003 Jeep Liberty.
