How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

Today on this 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 we are going to install part number 75662 from Draw-Tite. This will also apply to part number 87530 from Hidden Hitch. Okay we will go ahead and show you where the hitch mounts up to the vehicle bumper. What is going to happen is the hitch is going to mount here in the bumper where the traditional hitch ball would mount and also there is holes on the back of this tube here that the hitch will mount up to. :22

The next thing we have to do is take off this little cover for the hitch hole and it just basically pops right off. And this will stay off. Next we are going to start installing our hardware on the inside of the tube here for the bumper. What we are actually going to do is use a bolt leader, thread it into the hole we are going to use and push it all the way up through the bumper structure here. Pull out our bolt leader. Then we will put our plate on first and push it down the wire, into the structure. And then we will thread on our bolt. This will all go back through and we will pull it out of the hole. 1:03

Now we can pull it out through the hole, but what we are going to do is push it back in and leave the leader in place. And then when we push our hitch up we will use a leader to pull the bolt through the hitch and everything. We will repeat this process on the other hole on the passenger side. What we are going to do next is put our wire through the hitch and pull it out through the other side. Now we can go ahead and undo one of these and thread our conical tooth washer and nut. Now we are going to leave this loose so we can move it around for the center bolt. The center bolt here which is going to go through the hitch bumper, we are going to install this bolt right here. Just leave it here for now. And then on top I am going to down our conical tooth washer, a large one, and a bolt. Run it all the way through. And then we will go ahead and just thread everything together. 2:28

And the hitch itself actually has a socket built into it so it actually holds the nut so all we have to do is tighten it down from the top and that is it. First you want to snug these bolts down and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. With that in a few easy steps our hitch is already installed. There you have it for part number 75662 from Draw-Tite.

Do I have to use the bolt leader to mount the two screws and brackets? Does the bolt leader come with the product? Thanks!

Yes, the bolt leader will be needed to pull two bolts into position inside the bumper tube. Included in the hardware kit of the hitch are 2 pull wires sized for those bolts.
