How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

Today, on this 07 Mitsubishi Outlander we are going to install part number 87444 from Hidden Hitch, this will also apply to part number 75555 from Draw-Tite. First, what I will do is go ahead and lower our muffler so we have access to the frame where the hitch will mount up. The three muffler hangers we are going to spray down with some lubricant that will help make removal just a little bit easier. Next, what we are going to do is put a strap around the exhaust to keep it from falling down too fast. We will start taking off the exhaust hangers. We are going to actually use a pry bar to remove the muffler hangers. Now we got our hangers loose we can go ahead and lower the exhaust and with this strap you can control its decent.

Its going to use these three holes right here that are already threaded, on the drivers side it is the same story. And since its a little bit older vehicle you might want to take some time out to go ahead and clean up the threads. First we are going to spray it down and get any loose stuff out, then we will run our bolts in to get started and you can see we got some junk coming out already. Now we are going to run it out a few times with a tool of course until you can run it all the way through the nut. At this point, with our threads cleaned out we can go ahead and start installing the hitch onto the frame. What we are going to do is put the passenger side of the hitch on top of the muffler, let it sit there and it will hold that side up for us while we do the drivers side first. I got one started, lets go back over to the passengers side and do that. Next, we will go ahead and do the hardware for a tie down loop.

Whats going to happen is the bolts going to go through here, so it goes through this plate on this side of the tow loop and on the inside of the tow loop and between the hitch its going to get the square spacer and two more quarter inch flat spacers. Now I got a bolt through, we will go ahead and put our lock washer and nut on there and everything is sitting at an angle right now and that is because the hitch is still loose. So, what we will do next is go ahead and snug down the bolts that go to the frame and then we will come back and snug this down. At this point now all our bolts are snug down, we can go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions. With our hitch installed now we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust back to the rubber hangers. And with that, that finishes our install, part number 87444 from Hidden Hitch.
