How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Grand Caravan

Today on this 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan we are going to install part number 87451 from Hidden Hitch. This will also apply to part number 75579 from Draw-Tite. The first thing we need to do is lower the exhaust over on the passenger side and there are two hangers that we need to undo. There is one right here behind the muffler and there is one farther up past the axle by the main muffler. All you have got to do is unbolt right here. Now you can see the two attaching points in the passenger side here. We are going to use this bolt and this bolt right next to this line. On the driver side is going to use all three bolts shown here. Lets start removing the bolts. We will start with the bolts closest to the bumper and work our way back. 00:52

You can see how close this line is to the bolt so basically you are just going to manipulate it out of the way so you can get to it. One thing I will point out is that when you undo the last bolt this whole bracket for the bumper will tilt up so that is one thing to pay attention to when you put your bolts in that it is not going to be perfectly flat so you may have to go at an angle to get everything started. At this point we can start installing the hitch and we will be using the factory bolts that we just took out to do that. It is a good idea to have an extra set of hands to grab it because it is kind of awkward to get it lined up on such a wide vehicle. 01:41

When you install the hitch make sure you slip it over the line here and then back into position. Then we can start installing the rest of the hardware. We have got these two started on this side now lets go over to the driver side and snug down the first bolt. Normally we would leave everything loose but in this case we are actually going to tighten down this bolt that way it will bring the bracket on the inside back down and make it a little bit easier to thread in the two bolts back farther in the frame. We are going to use a screwdriver and put it in here to kind of manipulate it left and right as we need to because the holes are just a little bit off. Now lets loosen that one bolt that we just snugged down and then we can adjust the hitch left and right to its final center position. With the hitch set the way you want it lets snug down the bolts. With the bolts snugged down we will torque them down as specified in the instructions. 02:41

Also the hitch came with a piece of loom and what we are going to do is run it around that line that we moved to get a little protection from that bolt. We will zip tie it into place and then push the whole thing back up. Put it back up in its original position and you should be okay. We still have got about 1/ 8 of an inch to play. We have enough bolts so we should be fine. Now we can reinstall the exhaust. When you tighten the muffler back up put a little pressure on the outside so it keeps it away from the hitch because it will swivel on the hanger so if you keep doing that and then tighten it up that will hold its position. With the exhaust reattached our install is finished. Now we have got the vehicle off the ramp we can get some measurements off the hitch and that will help you in ing some accessories such as a bicycle rack, a cargo carrier, or a ball mount. From the top of the receiver tube down to the ground on this particular vehicle is about 12-1/ 2 inches and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside edge of the bumper is going to be 7 inches. There you have it for part number 87451 from Hidden Hitch on this 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan.
