How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2008 Kia Sportage

Today on this 2008 Kia Sportage we will be installing Curt hitch part number 13526. Okay underneath the vehicle we are actually taking a look at the driver side frame rail. We are going to go ahead and point out the mounting holes for our trailer hitch. As you can see here we have got two existing bolts in the frame and then one empty weld nut right next to it. We are going to remove those two bolts and use the third weld nut as well and those will be our three attaching points for our trailer hitch. We will be using new hardware for these three weld nuts. We will be using the 10 millimeter bolts with a conical tooth washer that is provided with our installation kit. 00:36

Over here on the passenger side we will be using the same three weld nuts. As you can see along here on the passenger side we do have a tow hook that is in our way. So we do need to remove that first. There are five bolts holding this tow hook on. Two at the rear, two at the front at the bottom of the frame, and then one on the side of the frame. Then again we will be using at the bottom of the frame an attaching point this third weld nut which again has a bolt in the frame. We will be removing that bolt as well and replacing it with the hardware provided with our installation kit.01:07

Also in preparation for our hitch install we want to go ahead and lower the exhaust down off of its three rear most hangers. Two here on the driver side and one over on the passenger side. To remove the exhaust off of its hangers we simply are going to take a spray lubricant like a WD-40 and spray down the studs of the exhaust. We can take a pair of pliers or a pry bar and just slide that right off there. Okay we just want to repeat that process for all three of the hangers. Okay with the exhaust down and the bolts removed we can go ahead and put our hitch up into position. You want to make sure over here on the passenger side that we go up and over the exhaust. Okay with all the bolts in place we can go ahead and torque them down. You want to check with the directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each of the bolts. With the bolts torqued down our hitch installation is complete. We just want to make sure we put our exhaust back up on its hangers. With that, that will conclude the installation of Curt hitch part number 13526 on a 2008 Kia Sportage.
