etrailer XHD Tow Bar - Hitch Mount Style - e84ZR Review

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at Today we're going to take a look at this etrailer XHD 2 inch RV mount non-binding tow bar for the Roadmaster direct connect base plates. And this has a 10,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this tow bar will let you tow your vehicle safely and securely behind your motor home. The shank portion right here is what will slide into the 2 inch trailer hitch receiver on your RV.

And there's no ball mounts necessary. If you notice on the shank, there's two hitch pin holes right here that are about 2 inches apart. This will allow you to position the tow bar closer to or further from your RV, depending on your application, without sacrificing any load capacity. And if you notice the pin and clip right here is included to secure it to your hitch. Also there's no need for any high/low adapter on most setups.

The adjustable head right here, this will tilt either up or down 3 inches to help keep your tow bar parallel with the road during towing. The shank also if you notice we have it in the drop position, has a 1 1/2 inch drop, or if you've turned it over 1 1/2 inch rise for additional height adjustability. Now the arms on this tow bar, they are telescoping self-supporting arms, which make for a fast, easy hookup. The main feature is the nice self-supporting of the arm. And the reason that is is these arms won't fall to the ground when they're unfolded. Some of your tow bar systems that are out there require you to try and balance both arms at the same time while trying to hook them up.

These, being self-supporting, are pretty nice.Just to show you what we're talking about is if you lift this arm up like that, it'll stay in that position. If you push it down a little bit, it'll stay there also. Lift it up again. So wherever you let go of it, it'll stay in that position, which will help you out as far as hooking up. Also both of these arms they will give you a full articulation, allows for unlimited spread to fit your application.

Basically, this arm here could extend all the way out this way. This one could extend all the way out this way, and this is a self-aligning design. You just hook up and drive the RV forward. Basically, what'll happen is the stainless steel inner arms are right here. You can see that they'll extend to a nice rigid tow-ready position. And then when you get far enough, they'll automatically lock into place. They are a nice non-binding design, so they do allow you to easily release your vehicle even on unlevel ground. Has this trigger release, one on each arm, and you just push in on that and it releases the arm. Makes it real easy to activate it. These will even release when they're under pressure. So like we mentioned, if you're on unlevel ground push that and it'll release the arms. Also, if you noticed on each arm, they have these integrated cable mounting clips. These are designed to keep your safety cables right here. The included safety cables off the ground prevent any dragging. And if you notice the cables themselves, the whole length of the cable have this nice final coating on them to protect them. And on each end, they have these large steel S hooks with the spring loaded latches for added security. You might notice here on this one arm, it has this storage rod right here. What that's designed for, it's a built-in storage rod to keep your coiled electrical cord in place and off the ground. Now the electrical cord is not included. That is sold separately, but basically once you plug in your electrical cord and then you have the coils there that hang down to keep them from hanging onto the ground, you just pull this clip off, slide the extra coils onto this rod, push the clip back on, and it'll hold it out of the way and up off the ground. Also this offers a nice, simple, secure storage alongside your motor home. These arms themselves can be folded together, and then you can swing them all the way to the left and they'll lock into place right on these holes here on these plates, or you can put them together, swing it all the way to the right. They'll lock into place over here. Or as I mentioned earlier, you could swing this one this way and it'll lock in, this one all the way this way and it'll lock in. So a couple of different ways to secure it, store it.This does have a nice e-coat finish on. It provides corrosion resistance. This part is made in the USA. Few specs on this part number. This part number is designed to work with the Roadmaster direct connect base plates. The base plates are sold separately. They are the EZ5, the MS, and the MX series base plates. Now this part does include the Roadmaster adapters and the hardware to connect those to those base plates. Application again, this fits into a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. Now the weight capacity on this tow bar is 10,500 pounds. A note I do want to mention is a trailer we do also make a SD tow bar, which is a lower 6,000 pound capacity. And when you look at both of them, they look exactly the same. The difference is this XHD tow bar has a higher capacity, but that's because it uses a larger diameter stainless steel arm right here. So because of these larger arms, that'll get the higher weight capacity. Total overall weight on this tow bar is about 46 pounds.A few dimensions I want to go over. The arm length. In other words, if we push these two arms together, so we have it straight, and then if we measured from the center of this hitch pin hole at the end of the shank to the center of the base plate pin hole when they're straight ahead in the retracted position would be 39 1/4 inches. If we extended the rods all the way out the arms and then measured that same measurement, it would be 51 and 3/4 inches. Also the distance from this center of the hitch pin hole at the end of the shank to where the rise of the drop begins the curve right here, center is going to be about 5 1/2 inches. And then the distance from that same hitch pin hole at the end of the shank to this vertical bolt in the head, 12 1/2 inches. It does come with this nice operator's manual that describes how this all goes together and how it operates. But that should do it for the review on this etrailer XH D 2 inch RV mount nonbinding tow bar for the Roadmaster direct connect base plates with a 10,500 pound gross towing weight capacity.
