Today we are going to take a look at the 10-inch Uni-Servo hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 3500 pound axles, and this is the left-hand or driver side assembly. Now this hydraulic drum brake assembly is designed for use with the surge-type trailer brake actuators. This is a Uni-Servo design, which means it's a single plunger design, as you can see right here. Now the size on this is listed as 10 inches by 2-1/4 inches, and what they are telling you is the 10 inches would be the diameter, which is measured edge to edge, so if we take a ruler and go edge to edge is 10 inches, and then the 2-1/4 basically means the width of the pad on the shoe, so again, when we put that on there, you can see 2-1/4 inches, so 10 inches by 2-1/4 inches, and this is the driver's side or left-hand side. The easiest way to tell that now, all the new ones will come with a sticker that will say left-hand so you know what it is, but if the sticker is not there, the easiest way to tell what side this assembly goes on is just to look at the size or length of the shoe. If you look at this shoe compared to this one, this shoe is larger or longer and this one is shorter, so basically the shorter shoe will always be installed with the shorter shoe facing the front of the trailer, so basically here's the shorter shoe, and if this is the front of the trailer, that means this is the driver's side or left-hand side. Now these brake shoes are lined with a nice automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded. It is not riveted to the shoes, so it gives you a lot longer life and more braking torque.
The lining also has tapered edges, and then they do a circular grinding to the material to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock-up. Now these are manual adjustment brakes, so it does require a periodic manual adjustment on it. The nice thing on this, here's the star wheel that you adjust it with. It does use a fine-tooth gear and that allows for more precise setting, and there is no break-in period needed following your initial adjustment. When you go to install these and do your adjustments, what you will do is go to the back, and you'll notice there are two holes here. These have plugs in them. That's the nice thing about this assembly.
It comes with the rubber plugs already installed. You basically pop those plugs out, you put your adjustment tool in there or your screwdriver, and you can adjust the star wheel to get your setting correct for your brakes. Again, the adjuster plugs are included. A lot of brake assemblies will not include those, but you do want to have plugs in there to keep any dirt from getting into the brake assembly and causing problems, so these do come with that. They also come as you notice with the mounting bolts. This is designed to fit on a four-bolt brake mounting flange, and it comes with the bolts, so all you would need is the nuts and the lock washers.
We do also sell those separately on our website, and they are listed on this page as a related product. Now the backing plate does have an E-coating to it to help resist wear and corrosion. This brake assembly is certified by U.S. SAE standards and the CSA, which are the Canadian standards. Again, the dimension we mentioned is 10 inches by 2-1/4 inches. This is designed to fit a 3500 pound axle, and this does use 10-inch drums. That should do it for the review of the 10 inch Uni-Servo hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 3500 pound axles, and this is the driver side or left-hand side assembly..
