Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKFBBRK-7L-D

Today, we're going to take a look at the twelve inch by two inch uniserval, free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly with the dacramat finish, for fifty two hundred pound up to seven thousand pound axles and this is the left hand driver's side assembly. Now this hydraulic drum brake assembly is a uniserval free backing design which is used on trailers with surge type brake actuators that have no reverse lockout. This one has the nice dacramat coating over the whole wheel which is usually used in marine application because it provides superior corrosion resistance for fresh water or salt water use. The uniserval means it has the single plunger design cylinder right here. Then the free backing design also. The free backing you can tell by the fall away shoe that has the D, looks like a D shape to it. This free backing design will let you back up without engaging the trailer brake even if the x rater is activated.

This fall away shoe, the D shaped shoe, provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward by a supplies only limited friction limited trailer's in reverse. The size on this is a twelve inch by two inch driver side brake assembly. When they say twelve inch by two inch, the measurement they're talking about as the twelve inch would be the diameter from this pad straight across to that pad, and then the two inch would be the width of the pad on the shoe itself. If we go to measure this, let me show you, edge to edge on the pad, you can see it's right at twelve inches. Then the width of the pad is two inches. Twelve inch by two inch, and this is the left hand driver's side assembly and you might want to know how to tell that.

Of course on a new one you'll get a sticker on it, it'll say left hand or right hand. If you had a brake assembly that you're looking at and there was no markings on it, basically just look at the shoes that are on it. If you look at this shoe right here it goes from here to here and then if you look at this one it goes all the way from here to here. This is a longer shoe, this is a shorter shoe, the shorter shoe is the primary shoe, that would face the front of the trailer. So because of that you'll know that this is the left hand driver's side assembly. The brake shoes on this assembly are lined with an automotive grade friction material.

This friction material is fully bonded, it's not riveted to the shoes, so it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. The pad itself, or the lining, you can see what they do is they do a tapered edge. A lot of pads on some brake assemblies would just be cut off straight across and has a ninety degree edge to it, sharp edge. Some things they actually taper that edge on both ends, then they do a circular grinding of the pad to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to a mechanical lock up. Now this is a manual adjusted brake assembly so it does require periodic manual adjustment.

You do adjust it right here down this right adjustment here. Nice thing on this one it uses a very fine tooth brake adjustment gear so it allows for a more precise setting. There is no brake inaudible 00:02:52 follow your initial adjustment. On the back to access that adjustment you pop out this plug and there's a hole there you can put your tool through to adjust your gear. This brake assembly does include that adjuster plug, which is nice a lot of brake assemblies will not include that, they just leave the hole open and you don't' really want that because dirt can get in there and cause a problem. This includes the actual plastic plug in there. As you can see it's designed to fit a five hole brake mounting flange, now the mounting bolts, nuts and rock washers that are used to attach this the the flange, they are sold separately. This assembly is certified by USSAE standards and CSA, which is the Canadian standard. Again, the dimension is twelve inches by two inches. It's for axles fifty two hundred pound, up to seven thousand pound axles and it is designed to be used with twelve inch brake drops. That should do it for the review of the twelve inch by two inch uniserval free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly with the dacramat finish for fifty two hundred pound to seven thousand pound axles. This is for the left hand driver's side assembly.
