Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKFBBRK-35R

Today we're going to take at the 10" Uni-Servo Free Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly for 3,500 Pound Axles. This one is the right hand passenger side assembly. Now, this hydraulic drum brake assembly is a uni-servo and a free backing design which is used on trailers with surge type brake actuators, that have no reverse lock out. The uni-servo design you can see right here is a single plunger design. The free backing design, you can always tell by the D-shape shoe. This will let you back up without engaging the trailer brake even if the actuator's activated.

This fall away shoes, the D-shape right here will provide full breaking when your trailer's moving forward. It's applies on the limited friction when the trailer's moving in reverse. Now, the size on this brake assembly is 10" by 2 1/4". When they say that, and this is the passenger side brske assembly. Now when they give you the size of 10" by 2 1/4", that measurement, the 10" would be the diameter from this brake pad to this brake pad right across. Then the 2 1/4" would be the width of the pad itself.

If we take the ruler and put it edge to edge, you will see right at 10". Then the 2 1/4", if we do it on a pad, let's see 2 1/4" the width of the pad. It's 10" by 2 1/4", and this is the right hand passenger side. Usually, when you get the way you can tell what side this goes on, when you get them brand new, they'll have a sticker of course that'll say right or left side. That's pretty easy, but if you have one that doesn't have the sticker, the easiest way is just to look at the size of the pad on the brake shoe. If you see here, this pad goes here to here.

If you look at this one, it goes all the way here to here. This is a longer pad than this one, the shorter pad is your primary shoe, so that will always face the front of the trailer. That will tell you that this one is the passenger side brake assembly. That's the easiest way to tell what side it goes on. Now this brake shoes are lined with an automotive grade fiction material.

This friction material is fully bonded, it's not riveted to the shoes. It gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. The other nice thing is on the brake lining, usually in a lot of brake assemblies, they'll just chop off on each edge. This one they actually taper the edges, then they do a circular grinding on the pad to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock up. Now, this is a manual adjustment brake, so it does require periodic manual adjustment. The adjuster right down here and this is nice because this one has the fine tooth brake adjustment gear, so it allows for a more precise setting when you're adjusting it. There is no break-in period needed following your initial adjustment. When you go to adjust it, if you're to go to the back, you'll notice there's two adjuster plugs right here. This one's has the plugs included which is nice because a lot of brake assembly will leave that open. Just the holes open, and you don't really want that because dirt could get in there and cause problems with the brakes. They do actually give you the plugs, if you just pop one of those up, you can get your tool through there and then do your adjustment on the star wheel right down here. Now this is also the backing plate has a nice e-coating on it to give you excellent corrosion resistance. As you can see, this one uses a four bolt brake mounting flange, as you noticed, the mounting bolts are installed. Now the nuts and the lock washers we do sell those separately on our website. This brake assembly is certified by USSAE standards and CSA which is a Canadian standard. Again, the dimension on this is 10" by 2 1/4". The axle fit is a 3,500 pound axle, and this is designed to be used with 10" brake drums. That should do it for the review of the 10" Uni-Servo Free Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly for 3,500 Pound Axles, and this one is the right hand passenger side assembly.
