Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKFBBRK-35L

SPEAKER ONE: Today we're going to take a look at the 10-inch free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 3500 lb axles. And this is the left-hand or driver side assembly. Now this hydraulic drum brake assembly is designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators this is a uni-cerval design as you can see it's a single plunger design. Now, this one happens to be a free-backing design and what that does is, it lets you back up without engaging the trailer brake even if your actuator is activated. Basically the hydraulic pressure is contained by the wheel cylinder. You can always identify the free backing design brakes by if you look at one of the shoes it will have a D-design to it. The D-shape shoe will identify that this is a free backing design. Now the size on this is 10 inches x 2 3/4 inches and the way they get that size is the 10 inches is the diameter of the shoes from edge to edge so if we put a ruler on that you can see, its 10 inches.

And the 2 3/4 would be the width of the pad itself. So, there's the 2 3/4. And as I mentioned before, this is the left-hand driver side brake assembly. The way you can tell that, if you get them new there will be a sticker on it but if there is no sticker on it, the easiest way to tell is the size of the pad on the shoe. If you look at this one its a lot shorter compared to this one which is a lot longer.

The shorter shoe will always face towards the front of the trailer. So if this is the shorter shoe, that's the front of the trailer. This you can see, is the drivers side or left-hand side. Now these brake shoes are lined with a nice automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes, it gives you a nice long life, more braking torque.

The lining has tapered edges on each end and then they do a circular grinding to it prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to lock-up. This is a manual adjustment brake, you can see right down here at the bottom is a star wheel to adjust the brakes. Now, when it's a manual adjustment brake it does require periodic manual adjustment of it and you do that by turning this star wheel. The nice thing on this one is the gear on this is a nice fine-tooth gear so it allows for a more precise setting. And there is no brake-in period needed following your initial adjustment. When you go to adjust it you will notice here on the back there are two adjustment holes.

This assembly actually does come with the rubber plugs already installed in it. Now a lot of brake assemblies won't have those plugs but we do recommend, this one comes with it but we always recommend the foot plugs in there because it will keep dirt from getting into your brake assembly and causing problems. So this comes with the adjuster plugs. When you pop one of those off you put your adjustment tool through there or your screwdriver and you can turn that star wheel to adjust them in or out. Also on the back you will notice it comes with the mounting bolts, these are also included. As you can see, it is designed for a full brake mounting flange. Now the nuts and washers, we do sell those separately. We do list them on our website and they are listed on this product page as a related product. The full backing plate itself is e-coated so it helps resist wear and corrosion. Now, this brake assembly is certified by USSA standards and CSA which is the Canadian standard. Again, the size on this is 10 inches x 2 3/4 inches. It fits an axle of 3500 lbs and it is designed to be used with 10 inch drums. That should do it for the review of the 10 inch free backing hydraulic brake assembly for the 3500 lb axles. This is the left-hand or driver side assembly.
