Today we're going to look at the 12 in 1 quarter inch self-adjusting electric brake assembly with the dust shield, for 8,000 pound axles. This one is a left-hand driver side assembly. Now electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Electric brakes require only an electric brake controller which we do sell separately. There is no ex-rater or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. This brake assembly is measured 12 and a quarter by 3 and 3 eights.

It's a driver's side but basically the way they get the measurements a 12 and a quarter would be if you measure from this pad to this pad. If we take the ruler and go edge to edge. You can see 12 and a quarter inches. Then the 3 and 3 eights would be the width of the actual pad on the shoe. If we put the ruler on that you can see 3 and 3 eights inches.

12 and a quarter by 3 and 3 eights inches. Again, this is the driver side or the left-hand side. Usually when you get new brake assembly's . it will have sticker on it. It'll tell you what side it's for. If by chance there was no sticker on it.

The easiest way to determine what side the brake assembly goes on is look at the size of the brake shoe. This one you see goes here to here. If you turn it to this one it goes all the way from here to here. This is the larger shoe. This is the smaller pad.

The smaller one is the primary shoe. That'll always face the front of the trailer. If that's the small one facing the front you can see this is the left-hander driver side assembly. Now these brake shoes are lined with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded to the shoe. It's not riveted. It gives you a lot longer life, more breaking torque. The lining on the edges are tapered. They also do a circular grinding of the friction material to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup. Now this is a self-adjusting brake. A self-adjusting brake you can always tell by seeing this cable that hooks up the top here. Goes around the poly hooks to the lever right on the adjustment here, here. The self-adjusting brake does not require periodic manual adjustments like standard brakes. All you have to do is adjust it when you initially put it on. It will self-adjust it as you go. The nice thing on this, the gear they use has a fine tooth gear on it which allows for more precise setting. There's no braking period needed following your initial adjustment. The backing plate is a cast backing plate. Has a metal brake dust shield on it. Let me turn toward the back. You can see here's the metal brake shield. The other nice thing is if you look at this, it has the adjuster plugs already installed. Down here at the bottom, the adjust plugs go in the adjustment holes. Those are the holes where you'll put your adjustment tool through to initially adjust the brakes on this. You always want to make sure they're plugs in here to keep any dirt from getting in there and causing damage to your brake assembly's. A lot of brake assembly's just leave those holes open. This one will actually come with plugs in there. Now the mounting bolts, nuts and lock-washers are sold separately. You can see it is designed to fit a four bolt brake mounting flange. The bolts, nuts and lock-washers we do sell separately on our website. They are listed on this product page as a related product. Now this brake assembly is certified by USA standards and CSA which is the Canadian standards. Again, the size on this is 12 and a quarter inch by 3 and 3 eights inches. The axle it's designed for is 8,000 pound axle. Again, it is a self-adjusting brake. Fits the four bolt brake mounting flange. It is designed to use 12 by 1 quarter inch drums. Now these are electric brakes. You can see the inaudible 00:03:26 right here. If you'll notice from the back of the electric brakes you'll have two wires coming out. They're both two yellow wires. One of these wires needs to connect to the brake feed wiring on your trailer and one to the ground. Either wire can be used for either function. It doesn't matter which ones you use for which. That should do it for the review of the 12 and a quarter inch self-adjusting electric brake assembly with the dust shield for 8,000 pound axle. This is the left-hand driver side assembly.
