Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-7L-D

Today we're going to take a look at the 12 inch left hand, driver's side brake assembly for 7,000 pound axle. This has a DACROMET finish, now these electric brakes are easier to install, they offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Electric breaks will only require an electric brake controller, we do sell those separately on our website. There is no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. Now the DACROMET coating on this which is used in marine applications a lot provides a nice superior corrosion resistance for freshwater or saltwater use. The size on this is a 12 inch by 2 inch and this is the left hand, driver side brake assembly.

The size when they're saying 12 inch by 2 inch, what they are saying is the 12 inch is the diameter from the shoe to shoe right across, so if we put a ruler on that, edge to edge, you can see it's 12 inches. The 2 inch would be the width of the pad on the shoe so right at 2 inches, so 12 inch by 2 inch. Again, this is the left hand driver side. When you do receive new brake assemblies they usually have a sticker that will show left hand or right hand side. Now if by chance there's no stickers on it the easiest way to look at a brake assembly and tell what side it goes on of the trailer, is look at the size of the pad on the shoe. If you look here you can see the pad goes all the way from here all the way up to here and here the pad goes from here to here.

This is the shorter shoe this is the longer pad. The shorter pad will always . Is the primary shoe so that will always face the front of the trailer. If this is the shorter one and that's the front of the trailer you can see that goes right on the left hand, driver's side of the trailer. Now these brake shoes are lined with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded to the shoe, it's not riveted, it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque.

The lining they also do a tapered edge on the lining and then they do a circular grinding of the material also and that helps prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock up. Now these are manual adjusted breaks, you can see the gear down here that you turn to adjust them, so it does require periodic manual adjustment. Nice thing on this, the gear that you use to adjust is a fine tooth gear so that allows for a more precise setting when you're adjusting your brakes. There is no break-in period of the brake assemblies. Now, when you go to adjust them, you go to the back here and you go to the bottom where the adjustment hole is. Nice feature on this assembly, you notice it has a plug in it.

The adjuster plugs are included with this assembly, some brake assemblies will just leave that hole open and you really don't want to do that because you can get dirt to go in there and cause problems. This one does come with the adjuster plug installed. You just pop that off, put your tool though there, access the gear, turn that gear in or out, whichever you need to adjust it to your application. Now if you notice this is designed to fit a 5 bold mounting flange, so you want to make sure the mounting flange on your axle is a 5 bolt. Now the mounting bolts and the lock washer are all sold separately, we do sell those on our website and they are listed on this product page as a related product. This brake assembly is certified by USSAE standards and CSA which is the Canadian standards. Dimensions again are 12 inches, by 2 inches, axle it fits on is a 7,000 pound axle and these do use the 12 inch brake drums. Now these are electric brakes so it does need power sent to the magnet and you'll notice the 2 wires that come out the back the 2 black wires. One of these will connect to the brake feed to supply power to the magnet and one to the ground, and are both black wires so either wire can be used for either function, doesn't matter which one's which. That should do it for the 12 inch left hand, electric brake assembly for the 7,000 pound axle with the DACROMET finish.
