Pop and Lock Vehicle Locks - Tailgate Lock - PAL85411 Review

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a look at the Pop & Lock tailgate lock kit. This is going to allow you to have a custom fit tailgate lock for your Toyota Tacoma. This fits the years of 2005 through 2015, so you can have that nice locking tailgate to keep all your items secure in your truck bed, especially if you have a tonneau cover or a camper shell. You want to keep all those things secure. The other nice thing about this system is that it's going to utilize the bolt lock core. That means you can code this or key this and like to your ignition key, and that keeps you from having to have another set of keys to carry around with you or put on your key chain and bulk up that key in your pocket.

So, it can key to like to your ignition key, never lose that again. And also, it's going to allow you to use your factory key fob as well. It's going to utilize the door functions. So, whenever you hit the unlock button, it'll unlock your tailgate as well. And likewise with locking it. So, it lets you use that powered function for your tailgate or your door locks to lock and unlock your tailgate as well.It comes with the actual handle and all the other stuff you see laid out here on my little table.

We're going to have the backing plate. This is just the mechanism that helps to control the rods inside your tailgate. This is also going to be your electrical connection. This goes to the short wiring harness that it comes with. And then, this has a waterproof connector that's going to go into the long wiring.

Those two connect here, you see we'll have our little grommet there. That's going to provide the watertight connection. The reason why this is split into two harnesses is so that the short end can go to your tailgate and allow you to disconnect this if you ever have to take your tailgate off, so you don't have to worry about cutting that wire or taking anything apart except for that plug. The rest of this is going to route up to your factory wiring. If it's a two-door version, it's probably going to be in the kick panel of your driver's side in your Tacoma. If you have the four-door version, it might be behind or underneath the trim of the entry or the sill there. So, depending on what kind of Toyota Tacoma you have, it could be in a couple of different spots.

You'll just make that connection into the wires there. They provide you with two quick splices to make that connection. These work just fine for most applications, but I personally prefer to switch these out for something a little bit more secure. Typically, if there's going to be a failure point on any kind of aftermarket accessory that's an electrical accessory, it's going to be at these quick splices. Like I said, they work just fine. As the name suggests, they are a quick fix.But if you want to put this in there and really not have to worry about it, I would suggest using a heat shrink butt connector. It's going to make it a lot easier, it's going to be a much more stable connection between the two because it's actually going to heat shrink around the wires. If you have a heat gun, you can shrink that down. I've seen some people use a lighter, you just have to be really, really careful to not scorch or burn the wire or yourself or anything else. But that would be one thing that I would swap out from this. It's just a small part that you can get here at etrailer.com. If you want to check that out, that's the part number there, along with some gasket sealant, because this is going to go from outside to inside your truck. So, you're probably going to need to find a gasket to go through to get this wiring back into the cab. And when you do, you might have to cut something like a preexisting gasket. So, putting some sealant around there is going to keep any water, dirt, fumes from getting into the cab. So, it's a good idea to seal that up once you're done. The kit also comes with some zip-ties to help to secure up all of your wires. It's always good to make sure that all of these wires are routed in a nice safe spot and that they're out of the way. But especially as you're running things underneath your truck, you want to keep them away from anything that's going to be hot, like your exhaust or anything moving, like your suspension, and zip-ties will help you do that. You might even want to get a few more zip-ties. You can never really have too many. The color for this particular handle is going to be Spruce Mica, so it's a metallic, really, really dark green. There should be a nice match with your dark green Toyota. There are a lot of different color options available here at etrailer.com. If you happen to land on this one, but you actually have a different color, we should have one to match your particular colored Toyota Tacoma. You'll also notice on the handle there's a little notch here that allows for your factory camera to come through. If you have a backup camera on your truck, you can still utilize that. This does have a one-year warranty. It is made in the USA, and that's pretty much all there is to it for our look at the Pop & Lock custom tailgate lock. I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is the right kit for you. Again, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.
