Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Ball Mount - Fixed Ball Mount and 2 Inch Ball - DT49MR Review

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the Draw-Tite ball mount with the two-inch diameter ball for two-inch hitches. And it has a 7,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this ball mount here is what will let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank portion right here is what will slide into your vehicle's two-inch hitch receiver opening, and then the two-inch hitch balls will provide the connection point for your trailer's coupler. Now, if you notice, on the back of the ball mount, the shank has an angle-cut end on it.

And the reason they do that is it allows for easy installation and removal of this ball mount in your hitch receiver. This ball mount will offer both a drop and rise position to ensure level towing. If you use it in this position, which should be the drop, it'll give you a two-inch drop. And that drop is always measured from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. So if I our ruler or measure, you can see here's your two-inch drop. Now, if you flip it over and use it in the rise position, again, measured from the top of the shank, top of the ball platform, it's going to give you a three-quarter-inch rise.

Now this ball mount is a nice powder-coated steel shank, and the hitch ball's a nice chrome-finish hitch ball. Both of those will resist corrosion. It does include also this pinning clip to attach this ball mount to your hitch receiver. The pin diameter is five-eighths of an inch. And basically, what that's used for is, when you slide this ball mount into your hitch receiver, you'll put this pin through the holes in your hitch receiver, line it up with the ball mount holes, and then once it's all the way through to the other side, you just clip it on that side and it'll it into place. And then when you go to remove it, just slide off the clip, slide out the pin, you can remove the ball mount from your hitch receiver.A few specs on this again.

It's designed to fit a two inch by two-inch trailer hitch receiver. The gross towing weight capacity, which will be stamped on the top of the ball, is 7,500 pounds. Tongue weight capacity is 750 pounds. I want to give you a few dimensions. The length of this ball mount, and the length will be measured from the center of this hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole.

So if we put a ruler on that, you can see it's going to be right at about eight and a half inches. Add in a measurement from the center of that hitch pin hole to the back of the shank or the end of the shank is two and a half inches. Now, the hitch ball diameter is a standard two-inch diameter. The ball shank, let me go ahead and take off the nut and the lock washer. This is the ball shank, it is a one-inch diameter. And the length of it, is measured from underneath, is right about two and one-eighth inches long. Now, one note I do want to mention is, when you receive this, you usually you'll get these all separate, so you need to attach this to the ball mount. You put your lock washer on, and then you put your nut on there, and then you tighten it all the way down there. Now it will require this to be torqued to the correct foot pounds, and the correct foot pounds for a ball that uses a one-inch diameter shank is going to be 250 pounds and it will require the socket size of one-and-a-half-inch socket to fit on that for torquing the ball to the ball mount. So just a note, you do want to make sure after you receive this and install this, that it does need to be torqued to those specific correct foot pounds for safety reasons, to make sure you'll be able to handle the 7,500 pound weight rating. But that should do it for the review on this Draw-Tite ball mount with the two-inch diameter ball for two-inch hitches and a 7,500 pound gross towing weight capacity.
