Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-181

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch right hand passenger side electric brake assembly for 7000 pound axle. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. These are also manual adjustment brakes.

Right down here you can adjust to inaudible 00:00:24 right here, so they do require periodic manual adjustment. What is nice on this, the very backing plate here, there's two access holes at the bottom here that you would use your adjustment tool to get in there and adjust the brakes. What's nice here is they include these adjuster plugs which will help cover those access holes, keeps any dirt and grime out of the brake assembly and off the brake shoes. This part includes the right hand passenger side brake assembly. The mounting hardware, you can see, is also included. Now, on 12 inch size brake assemblies the bolts are already installed on the brake mounting phalange, so all you need is the nut with the lock washer that's attached to install it.

A few specs on this, the size, the 12 inch diameter, two inch wide. Where that's measured, the diameter would be measured from the shoe to the shoe. If we go right across, there's your 12 inch diameter. The width would be the width of the brake pad on the shoe. There's your two inch wide.

As we mentioned, you can see the five holes on the backing plate. It's designed to fit a brake mounting phalangeal pattern of five holes. This does require the use of a 12 inch brake drum. The wheel size that will fit on this brake assembly is 14 1/2 inches, 15 inches and 16 inches, and again it's designed to fit axles rated at 7000 pounds. These are electric brakes, so if you notice on the back there will be two black wires here that need to be connected. One will connect to your brake feed, the other goes to a good clean ground, and they're both black wires so either wire can be used for either function.

This is a right hand passenger side assembly. The way to tell that . Now, on a new assembly, of course, you'll have a sticker that will tell you that, but if the sticker wasn't there, the best way to tell what side it goes on is look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This pad goes from here to here. This one's from here all the way to here. This is a longer pad. This one's a shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe. That will always face the front of the trailer, so that will tell you that this goes on the right hand passenger side of the trailer. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch right hand passenger side electric brake assembly for 7000 pound axle.
