Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - 099-175-20 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter DX 7.5 drop and go disc brake actuator. Fits a two inch hitch ball, has a 7,500 pound weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer disc brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Basically, this actuator works by the surge of the push of your trailer towards your tow vehicle. This will automatically synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle axle brakes. Basically what happens is when this trailer will push against your tow vehicle, the actuator portion right here will telescope together and applies force to the master cylinder right back here, which will supply hydraulic pressure to your brakes.

On the inside they use a builtin dampening shock absorber, which will retard the telescoping shock against the hitch ball. So you notice right down here, these bolts, these are rowers that have grease fittings, so you can apply your grease gun to it and pump grease in there to lubricate it.Helps provide smooth operation of the telescoping action. Now in the very back you can see the wire but attached to the master cylinder is an integrated reverse electric solenoid that you'll connect with this wire to your reverse light circuit of your tow vehicle. What that does is when you go into reverse, this will activate the solenoid and prevent the brakes from applying. The master cylinder that's on the inside here is an aluminum master cylinder.

It's better at reducing corrosion than your cast steel master cylinders. The other nice feature on this is called a drop and go auto latch coupler. This will ensure easy secure connection. Basically it'll install and seat around your hitch ball even when it's in the closed position. You can see in the latch right here.First what you want to do is, let me demonstrate it.

We'll take the pen out which locks it into place and you can see the latch opens, but you can leave it like this in the closed position. And what's nice is here's a two inch hitch ball that I pulled. You can see with it in the closed position. As you push down it'll automatically latch into place. And hook in, you're ready to go, and then you just slide your pin right through here and that'll hold it, keep it from opening.

And then when you go to remove it, just pull out your pin, lift up on your latch and it will remove very easily from your hitch ball. So that's a very nice quick way to connect and disconnect.Put our pin back through. Now the breakaway kit is included. You can see the cable here with the hook on the end. Breakaway kit is always required. Basically what this does is extends out hooks to your tow vehicle and it prevents a trailer in a runaway situation. What'll happen is if it unhooks from your tow vehicle, it'll pull this cable, which will activate the master cylinder to again to apply the brakes to keep it from a runaway situation. The zinc plating on this is corrosion resistant. It is a durable steel construction. It is a bolt on installation. You can see the bolt holes right here. Now the mounting hardware is not included, but these bolt holes from center to center about three inches apart. As part as in the USA. Again, the application is for hydraulic disc brakes. The ball size we mentioned that this fits on is a two inch diameter hitch ball. The mounting on this, it is designed to fit onto three inch wide channel tongue. Weight capacity is 7,500 pounds. Maximum tongue weight capacity is 700 pounds. It does come with a nice owner's manual to describe all the features and how it hooks up, but that should do it for the review on the Dexter DX 7.5 drop and go disc brake actuator. Fits a two inch ball, has a 7,500 pound weight capacity.
