Review of Demco Flat Mount Trailer Coupler DM12141-81

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Demco Trailer Coupler with the flat plate mount. The heavy duty ball coupler lets you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle, provides a connection point for your 2 and 5/16 inch hitch ball. It's going to offer a weight capacity of 21,000 pounds. It's going to be ideal for utility, livestock, cargo, and construction trailers. Now, the unit's going to feature an easy latch mechanism, that's going to ensure simple, secure hook up and disconnect. What that means is that you can easily connect this to your hitch ball with the latch in the closed position. Just line your coupler up over the hitch ball, drop the coupler over the hitch ball, and the latching mechanism is going to snap into place, and engage the hitch ball automatically.

You can do it the traditional way as well, if you want to lift up that latch mechanism and connect your hitch ball. You can do that. This is also how you're going to disconnect. You can see that the latch remains in the open position, without anything else holding it into that position. Nice trigger latch design, so you do have to pull up on that trigger to open the latch. Also keeps it closed, with or without a coupler pin and clip, or pin and lock installed.

A coupler pin is not included, so if you're interested in a coupler pin and clip or pin and lock, you need to check out some options at etrailer.com. Again, this is a flat mounting plate that bolts directly to the trailer. Hardware is not included. Diameter of these holes will accept 5/8 inch diameter hardware. Unit's made from a sturdy steel construction.

It's going to feature a black powder-coated finish to keep it save, and protect it from rusting and corrosion. Again, 2 and 5/16 inch hitch ball. Weight capacity is 21,000 pounds. Go ahead and take some measurements here at the mounting plate. Square design, so it's going to measure 6 inches going that direction, 6 inches going this direction. The distance that we have between our mounting holes going on center is going to be 4 and 1/2 inches.

It's going to be the same going down as well. Taking a look at the overall length, from the back of the mounting plate to the very front of the coupler. That's going to give us a measurement of, right around 9 and 1/2 inches. Now again, I did say that this unit will accept a pin and clip, or coupler pin and lock. They are sold separately. They're available here at etrailer.com. Few quick things to know, if you want to pursue that option, is there's going to be 2 locations on this coupler where you can install a coupler pin and clip, or pin and lock. You can install one right here, which would cross through, and go right above the wedge mechanism internal, here on the coupler. Or, you can do it traditionally, and slide one right here through the latch. The diameter of these pin holes are going to measure 5/16 of an inch, so make sure that the pin diameter is smaller than that, or does not exceed 5/16 of an inch. Then, you also need to know the span or usable pin length. If you want to use this location down here, the coupler pin and clip or pin and lock needs to have a usable length of 2 and 7/8. If we want to use this location up here, you need a have a usable span, or usable pin length of 1 and 3/16 of an inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the Demco Trailer Coupler.
