Review of Curt Weight Distribution C17002

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System. This evenly distributes weight over the axles of your tow vehicle and trailer for improved stability and control. Ultimately it's going to create a more level ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. Now this system's going to use round spring bars. These are constructed of solid forged steel for strength and durability. To adjust the spring bar tension, just switch the links and the lift chains. These lift brackets are going to mount to the trailer frame.

The brackets are going to take up about four inches along your frame and they're going to fit frames that don't exceed two and three quarters of an inch wide. I do want to point out that these are clamp on brackets. No drilling is necessary. They've got the threaded hole here in the back and will accept one of these sets of bolts. It's going to come with shorter bolts and longer bolts. The longer bolts are for narrower trailer frames.

The shorter bolts are for wider trailer frames. There at the head assembly, when you're wanting to tilt it, the desired tilt is achieved with a traditional washer design. So basically what you would do is you would add or remove washers from this spacer rivet right here to get the tilt that you need for your application. So that is a traditional design. It's very easy to do.

The spacer rivet installs between the head assembly right here and the front face of the shank. There's a slot located directly below the ball platform for that to install. Then those washers basically stack up to fill this area here which is going to allow you to get the tilt that you need for your application. The unit's made from a steel construction that's going to feature a durable powder coated finish. It's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The head assembly will accept a sway control attachment ball on either side of the unit.

Sway control systems are sold separately. If you're interested in one you can find them at etrailer.com. It's also going to come with the snap up lever. This allows you to get these lift brackets up in place and engaged once you have your chains connected. This bar just allows you to get the proper leverage that you need and reduces the lifting required by the trailer jack. The system's going to come with everything that you see here on the table. It does not include a hitch ball. When selecting a hitch ball you'll need to make sure that it has an inch and a quarter diameter shank. Ton weight capacity for this unit is 800 to 1000 pounds. Maximum gross towing weight is 10,000 pounds. This is designed for two inch by two inch trailer hitches that are rated for use with weight distribution systems. It does come with the shank which is what the head assembly mounts to and then the shank also goes into the two inch by two inch receiver tube of the hitch. It does come with a 5/8 inch pin and clip to get that secured inside of your hitch. I did take a shank length measurement. So from the very back of the shank to the very front, I got a measurement of 12 inches long. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the center of the ball hole on the head assembly, with head assembly installed at a straight angle, that measured around 13 1/4 inches. If you have this installed at the highest setting with the unit in the rise position, it's going to give you a maximum rise of about 5 1/2 inches. That's measured from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch or the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. With this in the drop position and the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's going to give you a maximum drop of about 2 1/2 inches doing those same measurements. I do want to mention that when it comes to maintenance, you will want to keep the socket mounted ends of the spring bars and the lock pins and the head assembly free from dirt. You also want to keep those well lubricated. Then also keep the lift brackets clean and lubricated to ensure ease of operation. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System.
