Troubleshooting Overload Message on Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller 5100

My draw tite box flashs ol .. I dont understand why..

Expert Reply:

When the Draw-Tite Activator Trailer Brake Controller # 5100 displays a flashing OL (overload) message this indicates that the unit has detected a short in the brake output circuit, the circuit commonly carried on a blue wire.

You'll need to trace the trailer's brake circuit wire (check the linked article to help you find the correct one on your 7-way plug). Check the wire for signs of worn or cracked insulation all along its length, from the trailer connector to the brake assemblies, looking especially at spots where the wire has to bend and where it may come into contact with sharp edges of the trailer frame. Repair or replace any damaged insulation/wire using at least 12-gauge wire (10-gauge is okay too). We offer part # 10-1-1 for this purpose; it is sold by the foot.

If you do not find any issue with the brake circuit wire then you can move on to the wiring for the brake assemblies themselves, again looking for any damage to the wires and their insulation. The linked article on troubleshooting brake controllers will help as well.
