Moving 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Install Kit from a 2000 Ford F-250 to a 2012 Ram 2500 Short Bed

Question:

I recently purchased a 33foot Cardinal fifth wheel trailer. It weighs about 12,000 lbs empty. It was being pulled by a 2000 Ford F-250 3/4 ton crew cab 4x4 with a 7.3 diesel and a 6 1/2 ft bed. The seller included a Reese slider hitch #30049 15K, the rails, and L brackets, bolts and nuts, etc. I would like to install this hitch in my 2012 Ram 2500 HD, 6.7 liter diesel, 4x4, crew cab with a short box, approx. 6 foot. I was wondering how much, if any of the used parts could transfer over into my truck. Would you recommend any parts kits to coordinate and simplify this self-installation, or would it be better to have it professionally installed? Also, would I need to install any additionally suspension assists? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks for your willingness to share your expertise.

It sounds like the installation kit is the Reese universal kit # RP30035. To use it on your 2012 Ram 2500 short bed you would need to add bracket # RP58186. You will also need new hardware # 58164 since the bolts are not meant to be used more than once. You can reuse the other brackets and the rails.

Installation is not all that difficult, just time consuming. To see if this is something you want to tackle yourself I have included links to the installation instructions to the right. I have also included a link to our informational article with tips for installation.
